Use of Paracetamol for children under 1?

Hi,

I am new here and also new with homeopathy. I have read a few books on this subject and am fascinated by it's potential to heal as well as it's gentleness on the body while doing the healing work.

I have been told that homeopaths do not agree with the use of allopathic medicines BUT, recently, my friend's child was having fever (38.5 degree C or about 100F) and i told her to see a local homeopath, this homeopath advocates the use paracetamol (in conjunction with homeopathic remedy) to bring down the fever for children under one year old.

May I hear from the other homeopaths here, do you agree with such approach? I had read that fever is your friend and don't fight to bring it down. It's necessary to burn the viruses off.

Thank you for any thoughts.

Dear Priscilla
Firstly, welcome to Minutus. I hope you will help us all to learn more about homeopathy.
Using compounds such as paracetamol is suppressive of symptoms and can mislead the homeopath.
Let us say the patient has a fever and you decide on Bell. You also allow paracetamol to be given.
The fever comes down.
How do you know your prescription of Bell was correct?
You don't!
Also if paracetamol has reduced the fever, you have lost one of your main guiding symptoms - so this is not a wise move.
Fever has been with us since our evolution. It serves a great purpose in assisting our defence systems which perform better at higher temperatures while at the same time the higher temperature weakens bacteria etc. So as long as it does not go too high to cause convulsions etc, it is a good thing.
Also in cases of high fever like meningitis, the last thing you want give is paracetamol - the extra load on the liver can actually kill.
Hope this has helped.
Rgds
Soroush

Hi Soroush,

What if the fever get very high above 104F, how to prevent a convulsion? (if fever medicine is disallowed).

And, in the case of convulsion, would it leave a permanent damage to the child ie brain damage?

Thanks

Priscilla

I'll weigh in in agreement!!
Many people--and apparently even some homeopaths--have been taught to fear fever, and see it as "bad", but this is misguided!

When I used to treat a family with little ones (and my own were little at the same time), the *only* situation where I did on occasion use or consent to Tylenol (I think that's Paracetamol?), was when the trouble erupted in the wee small hours of the night and everyone (meaning me / mom, I guess!) just really needed some *sleep*, to be able to deal with it (e.g. find the needed remedy) more clear-eyed in the morning. It can help the child feel better enough to sleep, meaning everyone else can sleep too... (I write this as someone who just really does not "run" without sleep, so perhaps I am overly wimpy with this approach, LOL!)

I was always taught that ibuprofen was the pain killer of choice as it does less damage than paracetamol.

Hm, Tylenol is aceteminophen, I think--anyone know what paracetamol corresponds to in the US?

Welcome
That is hardly a fever of any consequence and even if 105F, I don't
advise taking the fever down
Fever is there for a reason
You don't die of a fever
Seizures come sometimes from sudden rise of fever or sudden fall, not
just a fever
Doesn't sound like they are seeing a true homeopath

I have much on my webpage on fever
http://www.wellwithin1.com/fever.htm

Yes fever is necessary - not to 'burn viruses off', but it is a
normal reaction of the vital force to dissipate a disturbance

Again, welcome

PS - Paracetamol depletes glutathione from the liver which is needed
for detox - detox from whatever is causing the illness and then detox
from the paracetemol.
My webpages go into that.

And seizures from fever do not usually do brain damage.
