Dear Laurie, In message 28301 I said the following:

Don't use Calcium ascorbate - ever. There are very good reasons why,
not least of which is how it is metabolised in the body. Calcium
Ascorbate is a no no. I learned the hard way. Brief description.
In order to metabolise ascorbate, the Vitamin C needs a sodium ion.
It splits into two compounds, one of which is used, the other
excreted. The basic biochemical unit of the cell is the sodium ion.
If you use calcium ascorbate, the calcium sheers away, and sodium is
pulled from the nearest cell with it in it. Once the ascorbate is
split, the first thing it does is to chelate out the calcium, which
should not be there. Then what you have left, is what is available.
That is why you rarely get diarrhoea with calcium ascorbate. Because
you have to use far more of it to do what sodium ascorbate does. So
how did ester C become supposedly the best. I don't know. I know my
facts, because Archie Kalokerinos explained them to me, as have a
couple of biochemists. I needed to know, because when Archie sorted
out my arthritis after the rubella vaccine, he didn't put a label on
it. I didn't know what it was. So when I ran out, I went to the
health shop, and asked for "the best". Within 9 months, I was in
deep trouble and rang Archie to ask if this stuff was supposed to
kill me (had a severe sodium deficiency, which was stuffing my immune
system even worse than normal!!!). He asked what was on the bottle,
and when I read out Calcium Ascorbate - well - I'm sure he would have
boxed my ears if he was in the same room. Just joking. He's very
calm and gentle, is Archie. Anyway, he explained that I would need
to salt everything in sight for a while, and never to do it again.
Hypercalcemia makes cancer cells grow like billie-oh...

I suggest to make a cut-and-paste file in your data base so that you
will have the facts at your fingertips...
and more from Hilary

Here's what happened.. When ARchie and Glen pinned down that my
arthritis was caused by the rubella jab, a plan was devised in order
to knock out the antigen/antibody complex. They sent me a huge
container of Vitamin C which I paid for. When I had finished that,
rather than bother them, I went to the health food shop, and asked
for the best, and was given Ester C.

Everything went okay for a while, and then my general health started
to deteriorate. Then I got a massive lung infection, which turned to
pleurisy, and the doc thought I was going to kick the bucket. I
can't take any form of antibiotic, so it was a case of sitting,
waiting to see. I went to see a friend of mine, once I was vertical
again, and he ran some tests which showed that I was sodium deficient.

I don't much salt my food, but do enough. I had wondered why my food
was tasteless (apparently if you are salt deficient your taste buds
don't work right)...

Anyway, when I got home I rang Archie, and told him, and the first
thing he asked me was "What sort of Vitamin C are you taking, so I
toddled off, got the bottle and read it out to him. He hit the roof,
in his very polite manner... and explained to me that the biochemic
axis of a cell is sodium. It also happens to be sodium that the
ascorbate molecule needs in order to split into two compounds, one of
which is used by the body, and the other of which is excreted.

He explained that Ester C, is Calcium Ascorbate. So when your body
takes it in, the first thing that happens (to use terms I understand,
but which might not be scientifically accurate) is that the calcium
sheers off and become free (which by the way, is food for cancer -
cancer just loves free calcium). Then sodium is taken from its
nearest source to be used to split the ascorbate. But after that,
the first thing that happens, is that the calcium and anything else
that is in the pathway that needs to be chelated out, is chelated
from wherever the vitamin C is. When there's nothing else to
chelate, the vitamin C is free to have a go at whatever else.

And that is why people rarely get diarrhoea with calcium
ascorbate. Purely because to get to bowel tolerance, you need twice
as much. And I know that, because I needed a lot more Ester C than I
did sodium ascorbate. I just assumed that my viral load had got heavier....

But in the process, I had depleted my body of sodium, and was in the
position where the biochemistry of my body was so upset that the
immune system was now malfunctioning in a different direction.

Since that time, quite a few of my friends have taken Ester C, and
all have hit a brick wall of some description. The first thing I got
them to do was to salt their food like heck. Just to try to get some
stability in their bodies.

The point is though, that you should present the sodium with the
ascorbate. Do it any other way, and you are going to get biochemical
disturbance, and free calcium, and use up a fair bit of the C
chelating out the calcium. So what's the point in that? Using
sodium ascorbate is the least work for the body, and uses the least
amount of ascorbate for the best results.

Leastways, that's my understanding of what I was told. Now, that was
a long time ago, and I might have got some of the scientific details
a bit screwed in my head. But one thing I am not mistaken
on. Neither Glen, nor Archie left me in any doubt that I was the one
who had shot myself in the foot, and that I should never take Ester C.

All my friends who have ignored the money trail of the HFShops, and
gone back on Sodium Ascorbate say their health is much better, and
their Vit C bill is way way smaller.

Cheers,

Hilary.
