This may help - I wrote ANH on it early this month. I have a few more questions that will forward when received. I'm working on clarity of who is who among all the Codex and health freedom groups. There is NHF, oldest in the US, hold a seat in Codex, hear rep. now lives in Europe (not confirmed), then there is American Association for Health Freedom which I believe merged with Alliance for Natural Health (who replied below). There is Dr. Rath Foundation in the Netherlands. There is Natural Solutions Foundation, who don't hold a seat, I have the littlest trust here for several reasons. Then there is IAHF, struggling to continue work on the matter, is keen yet stressed, I'm learning more. So you can see it's a very convoluted world on who is generating information on this issue and health freedom, only some are for real & with right intention.

Dear Elizabeth
Thank you for your email. I understand your concern with regards to Codex Alimentarius, and the December 31st date and please know that you are not alone!
There is much misinformation going around about Codex, and that it is being implemented on the 31st December of this year. In actual fact, the 31st December 2009 is when the derogation period for vitamin and mineral forms not on the Positive List of the Food Supplements Directive ends. However, we are aware that many companies who are relying on derogations to allow continued sale have not actually put dossier applications into the Positive List and hence those forms of vitamins and minerals protected by derogations will be illegal come 1st January 2010. The Positive List is an open list meaning that companies can apply at any time and then require a positive opinion from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The derogation period is part of the transition measures of the Food Supplements Directive which has lasted 4 years and ends at the end of this year.
This doesn't mean that all vitamin and mineral supplements will become unavailable other than through prescription as of the 1st January 2010, it just means that if particular supplements contain certain forms of a vitamin or mineral that are not on the Positive List then those supplements will have to be altered or become unavailable until that vitamin or mineral form is removed or replaced with a form that is on the Positive List.
Codex is not a law or actual legislation, it is a collection of guidelines and standards that can then be brought into the individual countries' statutory instruments. Codex is not new, it's been a part of regulatory reality since 1963 and therefore is not waiting to `be passed'. You will see from the information in our news item (
http://www.anhcampaign.org/news/codex-m ... -confusion ) that the reference to Codex becoming law this year is wholly and completely incorrect as there has been a mix up with a date that applies to the EU Food Supplements Directive. This is where the confusion comes from with regards to the Vitamins and Minerals.
One thing we can take action with is the European Commission and its efforts to limit the maximum available dosages of vitamin and mineral food supplements across the 27 Member States of Europe. The Alliance for Natural Health has a petition that you can sign at

I hope this has helped clear things up a little!
Yours in health, naturally
