Minutus

I have recently taken in a cat that was in very poor condition: skin and
bone, belly full of worms - the biggest worm belly I have ever seen on a
stray cat - with infected bites to the face. I am pretty sure that
these bites are Adder bites - I have had this before with a cat and this
cat was living rough in an area where I had been photographing them
earlier in the year.

On first catching the cat and bringing him home he was quite irritable
and it was obvious that there was a lot of infection in the wounds
still, despite onset of suppuration: there was lots of matted blood and
pus round the wounds. I gave Hep-sulph 30c three doses over 36 hours
and the abscesses rapidly formed and discharged. I thought I was on to a
winner and that would be the end of that, but sadly the wound just sat
there and didn't heal. I tried going across to Echinacea as that had
brought rapid healing to the last cat with an Adder bite, but the wound
just sat there oozing. I tried Silicea as it is supposed to follow Hep
well, though I was sure it wasn't the remedy - why do I do that?!
There was no improvement. The wound then started to ooze really thick
foul smelling pus tinged with blood. I changed to Calc-sulph 12c (the
only potency I had) and the pus rapidly cleared leaving the wound just
sitting and doing nothing again with no healing following. The wound
has a musty smell to it now, and though there is still infection, there
is no major discharge of pus. There is no blackness or blueness to the
wound and no real inflammation just a reddish/yellowish wound with a
tiny bit of swelling.

The cat is eating well and seems well in himself but sleeps a lot - that
could be down to his normal nature or the effects of the wound - as I
don't know the cat in health I can't tell. He has no thirst: I haven't
seen him have a single drink.

I am just trying to figure where to go next and wondered if anyone had
any suggestions?

Perhaps Pyrogen?: "Useful when the best selected remedies do not relieve
or permanently improve." DL's site.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

I think there was a similar case Miranda Castro used Myristica successfully. Pyro. might also be a good idea here.

I was going to suggest Pyrogen, as well. It will often clear up this type of wound, but sometimes it takes quite a bit of time.

Ah yes, Myristica - that had slipped my mind and it shouldn't have done
as I have used successfully on several occasions in the past with great
success on dental abscesses in goats. Thanks for mentioning it.

two cat stories come tomind:
1. a male cat that had been injured somehow. broken pelvis.
healing was progressing well with arnica followed by symphytum
however, a large hole developed in the chest, over the heart area.
it had no inflammation or soreness when touched at the edges.
no signs of vermin or flies, etc.
the hole would begin to close and then pop open. i came to understand
this to be related to a constitutional frustration because he could not hump
up on his hind legs which was a very characteristic behavior. the hole
didn't close until his pelvis healed enough that he could, once again, begin
to hump up.
2. an abscess that would not heal properly--kept reinfecting with the characteristic
hot, nasty, thick, rotten smelly ooze. i put colloidal silver in the wound which cleaned
it out sufficiently that healing could finally occur. no further problems after that.

Hi Kerry, I had forgotten about Myristica as well! It's very good. Take a look at Baptisia, too, since you said he's sleeping quite a lot.

These are all the things I'm thinking of for the Mycobacterium chelonae infection, as well, but wondered if anyone had anything to add! It's been treated by antibiotics, of course, but to no avail. I'm the last resort for this guy, unfortunately. I haven't seen him yet, but wanted to get some imput before I do. He's highly immune compromised.

Kerry, I agree with Tanya that Colloidal Silver might be helpful. You can give it internally as well.
