Aph 72 - Organon 6

ACUTE & CHRONIC DISEASES

§ 72

With respect to the first point, the following will serve as a general preliminary view. The disease to which man is liable are either rapid morbid processes of the abnormally deranged vital force, which have a tendency to finish their course more or less quickly, but always in a moderate time - these are termed acute diseases; - or they are diseases of such a character that, with small, often imperceptible beginnings, dynamically derange the living organism, each in its own peculiar manner, and cause it gradually to deviate from the healthy condition, in such a way that the automatic life energy, called vital force, whose office is to preserve the health, only opposes to them at the commencement and during their progress imperfect, unsuitable, useless resistance, but is unable of itself to extinguish them, but must helplessly suffer (them to spread and) itself to be ever more and more abnormally deranged, until at length the organism is destroyed; these are termed chronic diseases. They are caused by infection* with a chronic miasm.

INFECTED BY MIASM----WHICH IS DYANAMIC IN NATURE and not a material thing, like the bactiria or the parasite are. the microbiological agents are everywhere, but they can make only that person sick who is already infected by DYNAMIC miasm.

Yet experience has repeatedly shown that *physical* infection with certain pathogens can *cause* lasting energetic changes, and that the venereal infections in particular can leave effects which are inheritable. That's what Hahnemann observed and taught, and it has been observed generally as well.

While it may be that a person who is *healthy enough* would not contract a venereal disease even after repeated exposure (a risky theory), it is also an observed fact that some have not *had* either the physical or energetic signs of the illness--or of the miasm--prior to their infection.

Hahnemann considered Psora to be the basis of all other disease, so from that standpoint I suppose we could say that if one is free of psora, then one will not "catch" any other disease. (But who is free of psora?)

How is that (first para) different to what you were replying to?

I thought he was saying that there need to have been *energetic infection with the miasm* already, before physical infection could take place, and that "infectious organisms" do not give rise to miasms. My understanding about the major miasms has been that it is *usually* to the contrary--miasm begins with *physical* infection--though in the case of lesser infectious organisms, I would agree that's the case, that a person will resist the organism unless there is a prior state of weakness.

I would be interested to hear whether others' understanding has been different from that.

I though Hahnemann had been pretty clear in *his* understanding that the venereal miasms he taught of and psora all originate in *physical* infection??

yes, nobody is free of psora. and this is what Hahnemann said, -'all are psoric, accept me".
and as historians say he too became psoric in his last days.

This so clearly points to the DNA epigenetic changes that occur with
trauma to the body--trauma occurring on physical, mental or emotional levels.
It seems, once again, that Hahneman's brilliance shines through. Without
the 'benefits' of modern labs, his observations of a profoundly deep process
were right on target. Gotta stand in awe of his perceptual abilities.

Tanya, my limited understanding of epigenetic is that it means "pertaining to epigenesis", the process of successive differentiation from undifferentiated cells. What do you mean by "DNA epigenetic changes", and what leads you to think that they have something to do with trauma? Are you referring to some kind of interference with gene switches so that some genetic sequences are wrongly switched (to become active or inactive) in the developmental process?

If so, it would seem that this possible explanation of miasmatic acquisition -- that it occurs through traumatic resetting of genetic switches -- is related in large part to trauma in the developing foetus and virtually unrelated to trauma in the adult (because most genetic switching will occur in that early stage); does that accord with your understanding of what DNA epigenetic changes (possibly) explain?

I'm interested to know what this hypothesis, if I'm interpreting you correctly, has arisen from and why its author would think that this explanation for miasmatic acquisition is superior to other hypotheses, such as one involving fairly well understood processes of parasitism (by viruses, bacteria, protists, etc.) -- can you refer us to any literature here?

Thanks!

John

John,'
There was a program on PBS a while ago, and another more recently that
described epigenetics. It is literally that new material, new DNA material
becomes attached to DNA strands and affects various traits, conditions, etc
in the body. These genetic changes are brought on by trauma of one sort
or another: Nutrition, emotions, drug reactions, etc.--any sort of trauma.
Once this epigenetic change has occured it becomes part of the genetic
makeup that gets transferred throught he generations. There is no way
to guess how the epigenetic DNA material will react as with many genes.
It is protrayed visually as a new little appendage onto the DNA strands.
It strikes me that is/may be the physiology of miasms.

Hi, Tanya --

Thanks for that explanation; I hadn't heard of this. Though it strikes me as suspiciously Lamarckian and therefore as possibly being mere castles in the air, if this process has indeed been confirmed to occur, it's an exceedingly interesting finding that suggests all kinds of possibilities and, yes, might very well have a lot to do with chronic miasms. Very interesting! Thanks again.

Cheers --
