Andy Weil

I find it surprising and disappointing that anyone would call Andy Weil a "pompous a**" and do so in such a pompous way. Andy has been a long long time advocate for and appreciator of homeopathy. Weil hired Iris Bell, MD, PhD to be his head of research at the University of Arizona, and he is a homeopath.

Weil wrote about homeopathy in the late 1970s and has written favorably but infrequently.

I am also shocked at how much misunderstanding there is here on the placebo effect, and yet, there are people here who are so "certain" that they know what it is. I want to encourage more humility and a large view of the subject.

Finally, I personally dislike it when people attack Andy Weil and other friends of homeopathy and CAM even if they may have some views that disagree with our own. If anyone here were to write about the broad number of subjects in health care that Weil writes about, we would ALL disagree with many of each person's views. That is ok...but we shouldn't simply attack a person just because we may disagree with him or her on SOME issues, especially when we probably agree with him/her on the VAST majority of them.

Yes...I'm a member of the Andy Weil Antidefamation League for he has been a long-time friend...

(book linked added below)
Andrew Weil sells, has market agreements, for overpriced vitamin/herb supplements and various products, like tea and skin lotion that bear his name.
Let's not confuse any "concern" for protecting classical/neo homeopathy and Andrew Weil's minimal "advocacy" of it for money making opportunities.
Maybe you can start selling these OVER-priced Andrew Weil mushroom skin lotions by adding some of your flower power GEM homeopathic boosters to them.
http://www.origins.com/weil/index.tmpl
Andrew Weil claims all profits from his products are donated to his Weil Foundation and grants issued to promote integrative medicine.
http://www.weilfoundation.org/grants.html
Why not ask your friend how much of the 2007 $1M endowment to fund Univ of Arizona Integrative Med Center and 2008 $600K grants have been used to fund research in homeopathy? With all that money and licensed MD's, including Iris Bell, who wrote, and I posted, a mixed opnion on homeopathy efficacy, you would think there should be some significant furtherment of homeopathy, wouldn't you?
Since you co-authored with Iris Bell a book chapter on cancer and homeopathy, this info should be easy for you to obtain.
You also refer to Andrew Weil as a homeopath and have previously written that Iris Bell is a homeopath. NOTHING could be further from the truth. and claiming that is an insult to any practing classical homeopath on this list.
One just has to read from the 2008 Iris Bell book, Getting Whole, Getting Well: Healing Holistically from Chronic Illness Here's the link with a search of the whole book for "homeopathy". Does this look like a serious practicing well-studied homeopath? Any USA MD can take a homeopathic intro course and call themselves a homeopath too.

Personally, I like Iris Bell but don't confuse her allopathic minded involvement with homeopathy and lack of homeopathic case cures in chronic illness with that of a dedicated homeopath.

Thank you Susan. I have explored Andrew Weil's website for quite some time now
and have heard him talk. He is a great self-marketer. When I heard him say on prime
time TV that only medical doctors can do holistic healing, he lost me completely.
I once tried one of his online questionaires to see exactly what he was promoting. It
was a major disaster in my book. The questions were flimsy in broad categories, leaving
out much that would shed light on a person's real life situation and conditon. He then
advises you buying his high priced vitamin conglomerates. I have not respect for him
and his healing. Several times I have seen erroneous and/or biased information about
nutrition or herbs on his site. I believe that people like Weil will sell homeopathy and lay practitioners
out in a heart beat if he thinks he will make a buck, increase his name popularity and gain
more power and control. I would ask Dana to revisit his trust in Weil.
As they say, with friends like these, who needs enemies.

And I too have much challenge when it comes to Andrew Weil
He has refused to hear any of us who know about the dangers of vaccines
He continues to advise people to vaccinate. He just doesn't keep quiet about it - he actually advises them to.
What a great way to have injured people and sell more product.

I'm sorry Dana - no I don't know him personally as you do - but my opinion, as a professional who has been in allopathy and now in homeopathy, is not a good one of him.
I also take issue with all the products.

Anyone who refuses to look at one of the most devastating things we are doing to the human race - vaccination - is not a healer.

As is TYPICAL, Susan (healthyinfo06) again provides mis-information. She
says that I called Andy Weil a "homeopath" (nope, I never did)...and then,
she tries to besmirch his reputation by saying that he is selling
over-priced nutritional supplements and suggests that his statement that the
profits go to the Program in Integrative Medicine is a lie. I sincerely
hope that people do not believe her, and I hope that she will realize that
her credibility is reduced significantly by spreading such misinformation.

Susan is simply making stuff up here and she is not grounded in reality.
And for this, I predict that she will now attack me (again).

Hopefully, she will realize that cooperation and collaboration amongst
people in natural healing is a good thing and that in-fighting is both
stupid and counter-productive.

This is NOT the place to attack people, not even people one disagrees with!!!!! (That "not even" is said tongue-in-cheek, BTW.)

Susan, why not turn your keen mind and investigative skills to furthering *cooperation* among the different people and approaches? Yes it's more difficult, but could leave a much finer legacy.

Whooops...when writing about Andy Weil, I referenced the woman who is his head of research, IRIS BELL, MD, PhD. When I sought to mention that SHE was a homeopath, I seem to have forgotten the "s" and wrote "he" is a homeopath. Iris is a SHE!
