The remedy is mostly indicated in infectious states
leading to severe prostration, hemorrhage (usually
dark and clotted) and cyanosis.

The patient suffers from profound weakness with weak
and thready pulse. He/she faints frequently. There are
attacks of cold and sudden perspiration.

Main regions that are affected are mouth, throat and
larynx. Mouth is covered with ulcerations with a gray
membrane. There may be 'necrotic destruction of soft
parts of palate and fauces'. 'Laryngial diphtheria'.

It is one of the main remedies indicated in
'Diphtheria'. One of the most important accompanying
symptoms with its diphtheiras is the red discoloration
of tongue.

Acute infections, pneumonia, nephritis. Its action is similar to that of the
toxins of infectious diseases. Great and rapid prostration, tendency toward
haemorrhages, from the different orifices, of dark fluid blood, cyanosis,
rapid respiration and heart action, albuminuria and twitching and jerking of
muscles. Typhoid pneumonia. Livid states from great struggling, where
suffocation is imminent and paralysis of lung threatening; profuse
perspiration. Affects most prominently the buccal cavity. This, together
with marked prostration, gives it a place in the treatment of diphtheria,
where it has achieved unquestioned great results. Malignant types, &
prostration. Coldness and nausea. Syphilitic ulcers when perforation
threatens. Can't stand up from weakness.

In diphtheria of larynx and nose with oozing Of dark blood. Necrotic
destruction (decay or death of bodily tissue Or mucous membrane) of soft
tissue of palate and fauces. Ulceration of mucous membrane in mouth, with
inflamed red fauces, swollen tonsils and swallowing becomes very painful.
Putrid dephtheria with marked prostration, cold body, icy-cold extremities,
scanty or suppressed urine.

Throat Raw and sore. Pain: Cutting, on swallowing. Darting from throat
extending to ear and head. OB Mucous membranes broken down, ulcerated. Looks
raw in spots, esp. in public speakers. Necrotic destruction of soft parts of
palate and fauces. Intense redness of fauces. Swallowing very difficult.
Thick greyish membrane in throat. Tonsils enlarged. Diphtheritic exudate has
appearance of honey comb, dirty in colour.

The history of [remedy] is a romantic one. When Dr. Alexander Villers was an
infant he had diphtheria. Known remedies had failed to arrest the disease.
His father, Dr. Dominic von Villers, was in despair. Taking counsel with his
friend, Dr. Beck (of Monthly in Switzerland), the latter was struck with the
likeness of the case to the effects of [remedy]. In some poisoning cases,
reports of which he had just been reading. He suggested the remedy. A small
quantity of the salt was procured and an potency was rapidly made and
administered. Improvement soon set in and recovered happily followed.
The patient, saved by [remedy], lived to do most brilliant work with
the same remedy when practicing in St. Petersburg and [remedy] has taken a
sure place at the head of remedies for this disorders. The local symptoms
are very clearly defined and among the general symptoms profound
prostration, coldness and cyanosis are leading indications. Villers had
better results with the 30c than with any lower potency.
[Remedy] is also a very efficient prophylactic in diphtheria cases. In
the sensational New York poisoning case of February, 1899, Mr. Henry C.
Barnett, the victim, was treated for diphtheria by his doctors before the
cause of the illness was discovered.
Beck mentions among the leading symptoms: extreme feebleness,
trembling, syncope. Icy coldness: general coldness with nausea. Diphtheria
membrane in throat, mouth and at anus.
Nash reports as particularly indicating it a chronic sore throat of
public speakers with rawness in spots and a broken-down appearance, as if
about to ulcerate and this additional condition, "it hurts the patient to
speak." Hemorrhages occur, dark and persistent. Swallowing is impossible or
causes severe cutting pains. Thought of food causes retching. There are
varicose veins with great tenderness on left leg.
