In the old days, when I was pursuing an autodidactic course in entheogenic
shamanism one of the weirdest highs I ever experienced was due to an
extreme dose of cough syrup containing dextromethophan. This is one of a
few unusual enthogens that I think could be homeopathically useful, and
would like to get proven one day.

The drug hardly causes typical opioid side-effects. High and very high doses
in particular can cause neuropsychiatric symptoms (euphoria, restlessness,
misperception, hallucination, schizophrenic reactions) that are similar to
the effects of the hallucinogenic agent phencyclidine. It has not been
established whether these problems are related to the metabolic phenotype of
the individuals. Besides that, there are gastrointestinal symptoms and skin
reactions. The most immediate risk arising from dextromethorphan seems to be
its sporadic abuse. A few cases of addiction have been recorded.

Sure enough, the ingredient panel of Coricidin (Schering-Plough
pharmaceutical trademark)
-Chlorpheniramine Maleate 2 mg, Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide 15 mg.

It is very likely that some compounding of the effects of dextromethorphan
(including drastic side effects) would be contributed to by the
chlorpheniramine maleate..
