I love that you started with a piece on the meaning and importance of symptoms. When I was developing literature for the IgA Nephropathy Support Network, I wrote that parents should avoid giving children with IgAN aspirin (Reye's syndrome) as well as Tylenol, Motrin, etc. (not kind to the liver or kidneys).
An M.D. who was working with me and reviewing the drafts said, "But what are parents going to do if their kid has a fever?" Duh... let it happen! It seemed to come as a surprise to him that fevers have a function.
In dealing with the swine flu, sometimes the first advice to the patient is "Get off the Tylenol!" Without a decent fever, their convalescence is going to be retarded.
Peace,
Dale
