Cytokine Storm Countermeasures - Influenza Concerns
Posted: Sat Aug 22, 2009 4:31 pm
If a severe flu strikes in which people with strong immune systems are succumbing such as happened in 1918 or with SARS or H5N1 avian flu, avoid the following herbs and foods:
*Elderberry juice
*Chlorella and spirulina
*Honey
*Chocolate
*Echinacea
*Kimchi
All of the above increase production of the cytokines NTF-a or IL-6 or both.
For any respiratory illness, also avoid dairy products and bananas, because they increase mucous production.
The following herbs, vitamins and foods are helpful against respiratory illnesses:
Garlic: crush and eat raw as a great anti-viral (for the last flu, I cut a clove of garlic in half and stuck the cut ends into my nose. A face mask is just the ticket for holding them in place! This worked wonders.)
Vitamin C: 1000 mg/hr for the first 6 hours, then 1000 mg three times a day. Blocks neuraminidase (by which viruses replicate) and inhibits TNF-a and IL-6 production.
Green tea: works as well as Tamiflu to inhibit neuraminidase. Also inhibits TNF-a production.
St. Johns Wort: Great anti-viral effects. Reduces IL-6. Used effectively in Vietnam against H5N1 avian flu.
Vitamin E: boosts immunity. Especially effective with Vitamin C, good for the elderly.
Apples: anti-viral. The peel is the best. The flesh may be too sugary for some.
Resveratrol: proven anti-viral. Inhibits neuraminidase. Found in red wine, peanuts, mulberries, raisins and red grapes.
Skullcap: Anti-viral. May inhibit neuraminidase. Drink as herb tea.
Cranberry juice: possible anti-viral.
Cats claw: reduces TNF-a production. Boosts immunity. Not good for children or pregnant women.
Curcumin: yellow substance in tumeric. Reduces TNF-a. Research indicates possibly effective in preventing cytokine storms. Must be taken together with black pepper or it will be metabolized in the intestine and liver. Should be avoided by pregant or nursing women. Dosage of 400~5,000 mg/day.
Astragalus root: boosts immunity.
Tea tree oil steam inhalation: possibly reduces TNF-a. Hot water in bowl with 2 drops tea tree oil, towel over head.
