treating very anxious dog

I have a friend whose husband is very ill, in intensive care. Their dog, an elderly street dog adopted in South America about 16 years ago, has become very anxious. The dog appears to be in good health for her age; she is very thin. She gets good food and gets walked.
She always hated being left alone and sometimes was very restless at night, but now, even when my friend’s son is in the house, the dog barks continuously until my friend comes back, and of course she needs to be out a good deal. The only holistic vet around here has a 2-month waiting list, so getting help there is not an option. The dog has been treated, based on about the info I have here, by my friend’s homeopath, but he is not helping this time. Does anyone have a suggestion? I realize that there is not much to go on here, but I don’t have more. Teresa (Northern VA)
