Excellence in Complementary Medicine August 2009
Dear Soroush,
" If we could sum up this summer in one word - perhaps we might choose 'capricious'. We seem to have veered from one extreme to another - weather-wise and this has been reflected in complementary medicine too. We've seen the out and out attack on homeopathy (which was nothing more than a PR ruse conjured up by a Big Pharma PR 'charity') and yet we've also seen the publication of several excellent research papers - and we cover a few of these below. I hope you enjoy this e-Newsletter and do let us have your feedback." Best wishes!
Jayney

A Natural Product Found In Liquorice Proven To Have Cancer Beating Qualities
A study, about to be published in the September (2009) edition of the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, shows that Isoliquiritigenin (ISL), a flavenoid found in liquorice, is a powerful anti-oxidant that demonstrates both anti-inflammatory and anti - carcinogenic effects. This flavenoid is also found in bean sprouts and shallots. Researchers in South Korea tested solutions of the substance on human prostate cancer cells and found that it inhibited the infected cells' ability to invade other cells and to migrate and adhere to other cells. An Extract From Berberis (Goldenseal) To Help In Ensuring Effective Stem Cell Growth
A recent study from Nanjing Medical University has indicated that Berberine - a natural extract found in Berberis (Goldenseal) (and in Coptis chinensis) has the potential to help overcome the problems in ensuring bone marrow stem cells stay alive after they have been transplanted.
It has traditionally been used as a natural remedy against candida and other yeast infections, and both viral and bacterial infections. (1,2)

Effective Screening For Early Treatment Of Type 2 Diabetes Years Before Its Onset
A study, about to be published in the Lancet, has reviewed data from the Whitehall II study that looked at just over 6,500 Civil Servants (without Type 2 diabetes) in the UK over several years. They took various measures at the outset of the research period and then followed them up 10 years later. Just over 500 had developed diabetes in this period.
The authors, Dr Adam Tabák, of the University College London, and Dr Daniel Witte, University College London, and Steno Diabetes Center, Gentofte, Denmark, and colleagues then retrospectively assessed blood glucose levels in these individuals at the start of the study. In the diabetic group they found a linear increase in fasting glucose levels followed by a steep increase - starting three years before diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes. Post-meal glucose levels also showed a rapid increase starting three years before diagnosis.
They also noted that insulin sensitivity decreased steeply in the five years prior to diagnosis and β-cell function also increased between years four and three prior to diagnosis but then decreased in the three years up to diagnosis.
The authors believe that it will be possible to measure these 'early' markers in order to start early more effective treatment to help prevent, or at least delay, the onset of Type 2 diabetes. Read full article here
Curcumin Could Reduce Breast Cancer Risk
A study at the University of Missouri amongst postmenopausal women who have had hormone replacement therapy has found that Curcumin (Turmeric) could reduce their more elevated cancer risks.
The lead author, Salman Hyder, explained: "This exposure to the progestin used in hormone replacement therapy, will predispose a large number of post-menopausal women to future development of breast cancer. The results of our study show that women could potentially take Curcumin to protect themselves from developing progestin-accelerated tumours."
The researchers found that Curcumin prevents the appearance of gross morphological abnormalities in the mammary glands, as well as delaying the first appearance of tumours, whilst leading to a decreased incidence of, and reduced multiplicity of, progestin-accelerated tumours. Read full article here
Can Vitamin D Supplementation Help In The Fight Against Swine Flu?
The Public Health Agency of Canada said it is to start measuring the vitamin D levels in the blood of H1N1 patients.
Vitamin D has been proven to have positive health effects for a number of conditions, including positive anti-ageing and cancer-lowering benefits. This latest research is to see if there is a link between vitamin D deficiency (given the primary flu season is in winter - in both hemispheres) and to our bodies' resistance to influenza. The Pain of Social Rejection Really Does HURT
Researchers at UCLA have demonstrated an overlap in the neurobiology of physical and social pain and have determined that a gene linked with physical pain sensitivity is also associated with social pain sensitivity.
Their study indicates that variation in the receptor gene often associated with physical pain (OPRM1), is also related to how much social pain a person feels in response to social rejection. They also found that some people with a rare form of this gene really are more sensitive to rejection than other people - and they demonstrate more brain evidence of distress in response to rejection.
One of the lead authors, Eisenberger said:
"We found that individuals with the rare form of the OPRM1 gene, who were shown in previous work to be more sensitive to physical pain, also reported higher levels of rejection sensitivity and showed greater activity in social pain-related regions of the brain ...in response to being excluded." Oxy Cholesterol - "Who Knew?"
Most health-conscious people know about 'good cholesterol' (HDL) and 'bad cholesterol' (LDL) these days, but Chinese scientists have now shone the spotlight on what they say is the most serious heart health threat around - oxycholesterol. This type of cholesterol is found in processed and fried foods.
The leader of this study, Zhen-Yu Chen, PhD, explained; "... the public should recognise that oxycholesterol, is (as important as the other forms) and cannot be ignored. Our work demonstrated that oxycholesterol boosts total cholesterol levels and promotes atherosclerosis more than non-oxidized cholesterol." Read full story here
The Anti-Ageing Gene - Klotho - Also Reduces Your Blood Pressure
Klotho - the 'anti-ageing' gene - has been found to reduce high blood pressure. This gene was discovered in 1997 by Kuro-o et al (1), and has been associated with anti-ageing properties since it was first isolated. Various studies have looked at the effect of Klotho-deficiency on the ageing process - mice without it go through a rapid ageing process - and studies looking at Klotho have shown evidence of life-extension, anti-ageing properties.(Overexpression of Klotho in mice might extend their average life span between 19% and 31%). (2)
A new study from the University of Oklahoma has identified links between the lack of Klotho and high blood pressure (hypertension), which could lead to a greater risk of strokes, heart attacks and chronic kidney failure. Researchers found that by increasing the expression of Klotho they succeeded in reducing blood pressure. They even found that this also led to the complete reversal of kidney damage.

Shortage Of Star Anise - For The Manufacture Of Tamiflu - Replaced By Fermented E-Coli
Shikimic acid is one of the key components required for the manufacture of Tamiflu and has - over recent years - been obtained from Star Anise.
Star Anise is a spice that is harvested from the star-shaped fruits just before ripening. It has been used for centuries in Chinese and Indian cooking and has been used as a remedy for rheumatism when made as a tea. It is also used in TCM to help get rid of colds.
Since 2005 shortages of Star Anise led the pharmaceutical company Roche to pioneer artificial ways to manufacture the shikimic acid they needed. Roche now gets some of this from fermenting e-coli bacteria. Read more about star anise and shikimic acid here
Latest Homeopathy Studies Show Positive Results
In spite of the negative press about homeopathy recently, where a Big Pharma PR organisation manouvered the WHO into stating a 'position' regarding homeopathy, there have been two studies published this summer that add yet more positive weight to homeopathy. The first trial was on people with Minor Recurrent Apthous Ulcers (MiRAU) or mouth ulcers. This random controlled trial of individualised homeopathy in 100 people was positive and the authors concluded:
"The results suggest that homeopathic treatment is an effective and safe method in the treatment of MiRAU." Click here for abstract
A second recent study which looked at differences between homeopathically prepared solutions and placebo demonstrated that even in dilutions beyond Avogadro's number - where theoretically no molecule of the original substance can be found - differences in the homeopathic solution are evident. The researchers commented:
"Thus, experimental evidence accumulates that highly diluted homeopathic preparations, i.e. diluted beyond the Avogadro limit, exhibit particular physicochemical properties different from shaken pure solvent. The exact nature of these properties is not yet known; our current working hypothesis is an increase in the solvent's molecular dynamics for homeopathic preparations Click here to read more

This excellent 332 page book bridges the gap between complementary and conventional medicine and draws upon the latest research from the fields of immunology, virology, micro-biology and of course complementary and integrated medical approaches. This outstanding book features a wealth of complementary healthcare recommendations which are supported by over 500 published scientific studies.
