Hi Ellen,
I did find it written well enough to folllow easily. It is "Dr
Bernstein's Diabetes Solution" and there is a this-century updated
version. (He's been working with diabetes a long time.) See if you
can find a copy somewhere like half.com, just be sure it is a 2001 or
later edition. For me it was rather pricey but worth its weight in
gold as understanding the process is a great help towards planning
what to do about it:-)

It also took away my hesitancy in using Insulin as a tool till I
could get m y levels down. He also explains commercially available
insulin well. The book is mis-named in my opinion - it's what people
need to understand to avoid getting diabetes in the first place so it
covers more than "after you have it". (Covers type 1 and type 2 and
so-called pre-diabetes).
