Re: Characteristic symptoms/ew kowledge

Hi Chris, List,

This brings together two aspects:

1) characteristics as used by v. Boennighausen

2) The evolution of knowledge
Chris before:>

Luise before:
Chris
Luise now:

Concering my point 1)

This is of course one of those examples where it is absolutely clear
that stiches are indeed characteristic for the remedy. Doing a search
for "stitch" through Allen's Enc. returns a extraordinary amount of
highlights.

I'll follow this up to try and find out where v. B. might have made
the cut between characteristic and not-characteristic.

To my point 2)

Even in this remedy the sx show that they probably come from influence
of the remedy on the nerves and the sx show that the remdy will be
useful to a ptient whose stitching pains are nerve pains. This kind of
pain is rather typical for nerve pains. This conclusion is backed up
by its curing or palliative power for "neuralgic stump pains after
operation" (Phatak, MM, Jain, pg 93)

Of course it would be similar to the samples v. B. cites, where he had
been successful

It is even more obvious for 2 other remedies that have those pains:
Arg. nit. and Aranea Diad., where Phatak especially mentions their
action on the nervous system.

So, this shows the limitations of such extensions:

Stitching pains in the heart, e. g. MAY be due to nerves, possibly by
problems in the vertebral column. They may also be due to
endocarditis/pericarditis.

The stitching pains of gout are probably not due to nerves.

V. B. did not know about this - so he could not qualify his statements
accordigly.

Anyone using his principle nowadays should be aware of it.
Yes- but he did not say that we can extend them
The only item that shows any geralisation is Nr. 602 - to the extent:
where *pressure* (not touch) on the affected part brings shooting
(pain or just sensation?)

Again here, kowledge not shared by Hahemann qualifies Nr. 418. These
stitches point to the effect of Bryonia on pleuresyy, i. e. the
inflammation (and thus extreme tenderness) of the pleura. (A key
"allopathic" symptom of pleurisy is that the patient lies on the
affected side, so that with breathing this side does ot move) - which
also would make it a remedy to be considered for pericarditis.

Phatak (page 136) expresses it: Bryonia develops a marked action on
the serous membranes and the viscera they contain, causing
inflammation and exudation.

So the meaning of these stitching pains is altogether different from
that of Asa foetida etc.

Other than Hahnemann and also other than he said: we do have a way to
look into the inside of people now and we can see more symptoms than
he could observe.
Sure - the majority of patients and remedies do NOT have those pains,
which is the definitio of characteristic in aphor 153

More examples and explanations are found in the writings of

Well, as to Jahr. Show me one letter of H. (to v. Bön) where he has
anything good to say about the other German homeopaths in Paris, of
which Jahr was one;-) I wonder to which extent (except local for some
time) Jahr had ever been close to Hahnemann. I think it is very
telling that in his aphor 153, both 5th and 6th ed., H. lauds v. B.
but says nothing about Jahr (or anyone else).

You are quite mistaken - which you should know, if you read my
article.

I never went into that aspect at all and Dr. Holzapfel, whom I do not
know except from his editing my article, with whom I have had no
interchange of any kind aside from that, wrote his editorial without
any consultation with me.

I also have no idea how the others consider the matter.

I do kow Dr. Reis and Mueller slightly better from the German list and
some email exchanges. Some years ago Dr. Reis asked me whether I would
not like to publish in his Journal/join his group, because I appeared
to be in line with the approach of the Genuine Homeopathy group. I
told him I did not think I was in line:-)

Regards

Luise

So definitely know what's true:
2 and 2 is 22 -
and 2 times 2 is 2:-)

Characteristic symptoms/ew kowledge

Hi Chris,

Sorry don't think I am adding anything to your general discussion, but
I am trying to follow you. I am just trying to follow your example of
generalitities stiching/lancating pain outward . I am not finding it
in Boenninghausen's rep. What is the rubric or is there one?

I do find boring pain outward in Boenninghausen. In Synthesis,
GENERALS - PAIN - stitching pain - outward

But also Generals stitching pain inward with Asaf in small type. and

Hi Ellen,

In the *Therapeutic Pocketbook*. Do you have the von der Lieth edition?
III. 1 Empfindungen. Page 184.
(Or Dimitriades' version on Page 141.)

Sensations
Stechen - von Innen heraus: (Sticking/piercing/stitching - from inside out)
Asafoetida is in Genius grade (5).
Chris.
