As described by Kent, the first thing which impressed one about xxxxxxx is
the violence of the mental state. It is a very active, agitated, driven
state. The person is out of control, destructive, even malicious in
behaviour. It is destructiveness of all kinds - against other persons or
oneself, striking, biting, tearing, shrieking, cursing - but most especially,
smashing things. Such a state may erupt rather suddenly, then subside after a
while, but the person is not free of it; Typically, it is a chronic mania, or
relapsing frequently over a period of time, rather than just a simple
paroxysm of rage.
The primary process in the xxxxxxx state is an uncontrolled eruption of the
unconscious, leading to violent, aggressive behaviour. In the normal sane
person, the contents of the unconscious - evolutionarily, the animal
instinctual level - are kept under tight control by the higher cerebral
functions, the conscience, societal and cultural influences, and moral and
religious values. When a person becomes insane, almost by definition these
controls are loosened, or distorted, so that behaviour deviates from the
norm. In the xxxxxxxxx state, the unconscious instincts erupt with awesome
suddenness and violence and there appears to be no chance for the normal
mechanisms to establish any degree of control.
This type of insanity is seen in the most extreme cases. It might be
indicated in a mass killer who suddenly begins killing many people
indiscriminately; of course, one would never prescribe SOLELY on such an
indication (another possible remedy might be Nux vomica for example) but
xxxxxxx would have to be at least THOUGHT of in such a case. One would think
of xxxxxxxxin the type of mental patient in whom there is no choice except
forcible restraint in a padded cell.
One limitation of the Repertory is that it does not indicate the STAGES of
development of symptoms. Thus, while many remedies are listed in the rubric
Violent, one has no way to discover at what stage the violence becomes
evident. In xxxxxxxxx although the onset of the violent stage may be fairly
sudden, there are discernible stages prior to it; Their recognition is very
useful in deciding on the prescription.
The original cause of the xxxxxxx insanity is a sudden shock. There may be a
sever fright, an emotional shock, a head injury, or a fever affecting the
brain (if the latter, it is quite likely that there will be spasms or
convulsions at even a relatively low level of fever). The emergence of the
unconscious then begins to show its appearance by symptoms such as extreme
fear of the dark - they need the light on all night. There may be unusual
fears such as a fear of cemeteries, (xxxxxxxxx is commonly found growing in
cemeteries), a fear of tunnels of closed places, fear of even viewing a large
body of water, fear of dogs. Particular symptoms may be triggered at night in
the dark - there is a definite aggravation from darkness - or upon viewing
the surface of a body of water. In the books it is said that xxxxxxxx is
aggravated by glittering objects such as shining metal, mirrors, fires; from
experience, however, this is more commonly seen in relation to the surface of
a body of water. Symbolically, such symptoms represent early signs of the
eruption of the unconscious, barely controlled. Next, there may be spasms in
various parts of the body - the eyes, the neck, the limbs.
The culminating stage is a full-blown eruption of the unconscious into
violent insanity. You may get a telephone call from a relative that the
patient has suddenly begun smashing windows and furniture and threatening to
kill family members. This is the type of patient who would need immediate
hospitalisation, restraints, and sedatives in the orthodox approach. When you
see the patient, he is aggressive and out of control, or he sits in a chair
with a rigid posture and a wild look in his eyes, anxious wrinkles on the
forehead, about to jump up and run out of the house at any moment.
On questioning, you discover that he has been urgently insisting that the
light be left on at night, and anxiously desiring company at all times.
Perhaps he has been staying awake at night weeping, then laughing
immoderately during daytime hours.
If left untreated, such a case would inevitably be institutionalised and
restrained. With time, the mental state may degenerate into a convulsive
disorder, or the common syndrome of organic brain syndrome or senility.
There is a relationship to rabies, or hydrophobia - xxxxxxxxx will sometimes
cure such cases. The hydrophobic state is also triggered by water, either
seeing or hearing water. There is a strong aversion to drinking water also.
xxxxxxxxxx has a striking delusion of being attacked by dogs, A FEAR OF DOGS
that might attack.
The acute stage of xxxxxxx may be compared with Belladonna. there may be a
high fever of sudden onset, particularly caused by meningo-encephalitis. In
xxxxxxxx, the fever may or may not be as high as in Belladonna, but the
xxxxxxxxx fever is relapsing or continuous, in contrast, with the remittent
Belladonna. One may reasonably give Belladonna with the first episode; if the
fever returns, however, Belladonna will no longer be of value. One must turn
to other remedies; if there is violent, aggressive delirium, with the usual
Belladonna picture of flushed face, dilated pupils, dry mouth, spasms etc.,
then xxxxxxxxx should at least be considered. The xxxxxxxx delirium is as
described above - smashing things, biting, tearing clothes, shrieking,
cursing. He is unaware of his surroundings, of other people, and even of his
won sufferings. In his activity he may display superhuman strength
(Tarentula). The child in the office sits rigidly clutching the chair in
fear, staring with a wild look in the eye, ready to pounce or run. When the
acute mania subsides the patient falls into the alternate state of anxiety
and despair.
One needs to be aware in studying remedies of where the focus of action
resides. In xxxxxxxxxxx the focus has to do with the unconscious, perhaps
even specifically the rage centre in the hypothalamus. There is a clinical
syndrome known to neurologists having to do with head injuries causing a
basal skull fracture and damage to the hypothalamus, resulting in
specifically the type of rage and disorientation described in xxxxxxxxx. A
similar picture can occur in severe extremes of alcoholic intoxication, when
the person loses all control and flies into an irrational rage.
xxxxxxxx also powerfully affects the peripheral nervous system. Particularly
it produces a spastic state of the neuromuscular system. It has benefited
considerably spastic children afflicted by birth injury or neonatal jaundice.
It can relieve the spastic kind of paralysis seen in stroke victims and other
neurological damage.
It also has the graceful, rhythmic, involuntary motions of chorea -
particularly affecting the upper extremities. Again, the emphasis is on
involuntary, uncontrolled conditions of the nervous system.
Although relatively less striking, xxxxxxxxxxx does have some effects on the
physical level. Some highlights; headaches which are aggravated by sun, worse
from heat, worse from lying and worse from motion, located usually in the
occiput but also may be in the forehead. Basilar meningitis from suppressed
otitis media. Strain of the eyes from prolonged studying. Strabismus if
caused by brain fever or injury. Chronic abscesses, boils, and septic states,
particularly when accompanied by spasms and convulsions. It has severe pain
in the left hip (bold type in the Repertory). A peculiar cough triggered by
looking into a bright light or into a fire. A senses of suffocation when
water is poured on his head. In old men, retention of the urine due to spasm
of the bladder.
So, in comparison with the other remedies, the point to emphasise is the
malicious, violent, aggressive, uncontrolled eruption of the unconscious,
particularly in chronic and sustained manias. xxxxxxxxxx is the most violent,
then Belladonna and finally Hyoscyamus. The Belladonna violence is mostly in
acute states. During the Belladonna delirium we see that the patient wants to
climb up the walls of the room. He gets up from bed, with a very high fever,
and you see him struggling to climb up the walls in a wild state. The
delusions of Belladonna also should be stressed, especially on closing the
eyes. Striking at people is also a strong symptom of Belladonna. Hyoscyamus
is more passive in its mania, being violent when move by extreme jealousy or
when pushed to an extreme. Desire to strike is a strong symptom of
Hyoscyamus. The rage in Tarentula occurs more in paroxysms. The Veratrum
state is as active and energetic as Stramonium, but not usually a violent
except in extreme circumstances.

These rubrics indicate that whenever there is a fear of being exposed, there
is a desire for darkness. They feel very vulnerable to attack. On the other
hand, when they have to find something or they want to expose something,
bring it into the open, then they want light. This is fear of the unknown.
For example: Europe is cut into two, one part buried, the other alive.
Parents separate: the child is cut into two, remaining with one parent. One
side alive, the other buried, not to be mentioned.
"Chasing imaginary objects" : philosophical, psychological devils. Pretends
that all is well and happy. Each person chooses his own Bible, the old Bible
has crumbled and new Bibles (cults) come up; each group speaks a foreign
language.
Vulnerable to being exposed, to injury, to hurt, to even look at themselves;
they compensate with psychotherapy. The feeling is of being "Alone in the
wilderness". Manic reaction, wild dancing, loud music, split personality,
sensation of being double.

Acts mainly on the sensorium, giving rise to delirium and hallucinations and
picturing acute mania.
In other respects its action is similar to Belladonna and Hyoscyamus , from
which it differs by its greater sensorial perversion.
It has less congestion than Belladonna , never approaching a true
inflammatory condition.
What are its mental symptoms?
Wild delirium, with bright red face, eyes bright, wild and suffused;
horrible hallucinations, objects start from every corner, animals spring up
to terrify; there is great loquacity, the patient talks all the time,
laughs, plays, sings, and prays; he desires light and fears dark; bright
objects cause delirium, spasms and convulsions.

Religious insanity; 11 despair of salvation; inspired talking, singing,
pious looks. The talk of others is intolerable. Self accusation. Loss of
reason or of speech. Talks in foreign tongue. Laughs at night, during day.
Proud, haughty, merry exaltation. Fear and anxiety on hearing water run.
Aversion to all fluids. Mania; curses, tears his clothes with teeth. Violent
speech. Exposes the person. Sits silent, eyes on ground, picking at her
clothes. Wants to kill people or himself; 11 wants a razor to cut his
throat. Anxiety when going through a tunnel. Everything, everybody seems
new. Wife thinks husband is neglecting her, man thinks his wife faithless. 4
Young men or women who pray, sing or talk so devoutly or constantly as to
excite the sympathy of all in the home. Can't bear to be alone; wants hand
to be held. Pangs of conscience; thinks he is not honest; doesn't know his
friends; raves about his business. 5 Esp. sees small black animals, such as
bugs, dogs and all sorts of crawling things. With the frightful delirium, he
froths at mouth, eyes protrude as in terror, bites, strikes, and has a
squeaking voice. Apprehension; starts up in a fright, all motions are hasty
and forcible. 6 Victim of mental violence, full of excitement and rage. The
loquacity of xxxxx., unlike that of Lach. and Hyos., is confined to one
subject; 8 talks of nothing but one subject. 7 Stupid indifference to
everybody and everything. The child on waking is frightened at everything
that first meets its eyes; wants to run away from them. Unconscious snoring;
jaws hang down; hands and feet twitch; pupils dilated. Weak memory; loses
thoughts before she can utter them; calls things by wrong names; 11 weeps
about her weak mind; after sunstroke. 8 Chases imaginary objects. Desires
company during menses. Delusions; body alive on one side, buried on the
other; DOGS ATTACK HIM; that he is falling; room is on fire; thinks he is
naked; impression of danger; fishes, flies, etc.; thinks he is divine; that
he is in communication with God [11 delivers emphatic sermons, prophecies].
Indicates his desires by motions of hands. Praying at night. Sadness in
sunshine. Weeping in dark. Weeps all night, laughs all day. Desire to break
things. Aversion to everything that is black and sombre. Childish behaviour.
Gossiping. HURRY IN MOVEMENTS. INDIFFERENCE; DOESN'T COMPLAIN [11 from
stupefaction]. Loquacity during menses. Pleasure in his own talk.
Threatening; 11 threatens to use knife on those about him, or threatens to
knock everybody down, to break furniture or to throw himself out of window.
11 Stupor: resembling highest state of intoxication from spirituous liquors.
No correct estimation of distances, or size of objects; reaching hands to
catch hold of objects across room, and running against persons and things,
which they appeared to view as distant. Inability to give proper answers,
rapid change of ideas, so that he seldom completed a sentence. Conversing in
different languages. Running about, crying out that all evil spirits were
pursuing her. Imagines he is quite alone in a wilderness, abandoned.

Hi,
This reminds me of a case I had last year.
A month's old child was loosing hair on the occiput
and the sides (opposite to baldness). There were no
other symptoms excepting what the mother told me that
having gone to sleep, he would jump up if the light is turned off.
So she was forced to keep on the light all the time.
Just as a shot in the dark I gave this remedy and within a
month his hair became normal. I was wondering if the child
experienced such an anxiety while passing thr' the birth canal
like an adult while passing thr' a tunnel ?
Some times it seems homeopathy works even when the
other 2 legs of the stool are missing !
