Minutus

One of our Cayuga ducks recently began limping. Left foot swollen along the middle "toe" and around the "ankle." My first thought was an injury, possibly a break or sprain, so she got Arnica, then Ruta. No change. Swollen area is hot to the touch. I now suspect a bacterial infection. She is holding the limb out and away from her, which might suggest Vipera, Belladonna, or Ledum. She does enjoy being in cold water... but then, she's a duck, so hardly SRP. She's had two doses of Bell. 200c. If there's no change this evening, I'm switching to Ledum.
Does anyone have experience in treating fowl? Bacterial infections of the feet don't seem to be that uncommon in ducks, but I can't find anything on treating them apart from using antibiotics.

To me the key is her holding her leg up/out away from her... If she allowed it to be normal, low to the ground there wouldn't be any significance, but Viperia has the holding the limb up in the air- elevated, so as to not feel like it's going to explode. Don't know how far a Duck can elevate their own leg, but it sounds like she's trying!!! I'd try Viperia....
I went through this once, which is why I'm so enthusiastic about this remedy.

Dale we have many fowl. Could be Bumblefoot/Pododermatitis. Look at these:

Bumble foot

Calendula, echinacea and hypericum.

I had a chicken with it and calendula cream applied and wrapped in gauze worked for her. That’s if you can keep her from eating the gauze(smile). Kathy

Could it by any chance be gout? I ask this because I once treated a chicken with gout for some friends The vet couldn't help, but said it was gout, and the symptoms were similar. The chicken also sat a lot of the time with its affected foot stuck out sidewards and limped if it moved around.
Urtica Urens helped, and the chicken would peck up the globules eagerly, almost af if she knew it was good for her. That's all I gave, but I guess you would need to look at the underlying weakness and treat that too.

Calendula (surface wounds) and Pyrogenium (with internal involvement
with bacteria in teh blood stream or pus at wound site) and ledum
(puncture wounds) are options.
Why are they getting infected, do you know?

Vipera has worked for me in the past, too. Unfortunately, because she's a Cayuga, the skin of her feet is black, so any dark discoloration (also characteristic of Vipera) is unnoticeable.

Thanks, Kathy. I have no idea what "bumblefoot" is -- or if it affects ducks. Eating gauze is hardly the problem! I tried caging her for two days, but she was so unhappy that I released her to be with her flock (and swim). Ducks really need their water to clean themselves. Deprived of it, they tend to develop problems around their cloaca. Interestingly, another duck in the flock earlier developed a problem with her foot, a growth or possibly an abscess. No heat with that one; I treated her successfully with Silica and she's no longer limping. She is, however, keeping the injured Cayuga company.

Interesting idea, Liz. I think it's more likely an infection from what I've read about ducks. Their feet are more sensitive and easily injured than chickens'. Bit if the other remedies don't work, I'll try Urtica!

I thought of Pyrogenium. No pus so far, and no evidence of a wound. I'm only supposing it could be an infection, but have no idea how it could have gotten infected. The ducks are young (raised from ducklings last summer), healthy, have an organic diet and daytime access to the outdoors. At night they're kept in the barn on deep hay litter.
