Hi,

I am having rubric problems. The rubric is "flickering pain in the
forehead" concomittant with temporary blindness.

CASE
M is 65 years old. Rheumatism, back injuries, easy breaking of bones,
cateracts, retinal tear and now atherosclerosis causing congestion in
the retina (aneurysms) and temporary blindness. The right eye saw
white for 3-5 minutes. Around this time, when she stooped there was
"flickering pain" in the forehead. The pain would go on and off
quickly. The doctor says that the capillaries are getting clogged.
This kind of headache had happened 1 time a week for the past month
before the blinding incident. I found "short jerks of pain" without
any remedies in Radar 10. Also, short jerks of pain over the right
eye, but the pain was more generalized. The single remedy in that
rubric was Ambra Grisea. She is not very shy, thin. Is worn out and
over-impressionable. This is my best symptom, but I can't find a
rubric.

SUPPRESSION?\
Symptum had brought on a brief aggravation of as though there were
white lace over the eye. I gave it to her after she broke both bone
at the right ankle and had a bleeding torn retina. Now I am looking
for a rubric to deal with atherosclerosis causing cataract and that
brief incidence of blindness. The doctors say she could lose her
sight if it happens again and she does not get help very quickly.
Like in 30 minutes. Could the symptum have been suppressive because
it was so localized and 6c was repeated everyday? So is it actually
is causing the head congestion and blindness. I think that
atherosclerosis is written all over her case though before the
headaches began.

REMEDY
I am coming up with Belladonna. Since she is in many ways a calc-c or
a sepia, sounds right. Murex 200c was her past constitutional type
remedy. It helped with many issues concerning vulnerability to people
who intrude on her territory.

HOW GOOD IS THE SPINKTER SYMPTOM?
Also, the bladder control became weak when she had lower back
problems. The problem with bladder control was solved with Murex and
it seems to have come back in this special case. When her back got
better, so did her bladder control.

These both seem like really good symptoms. Maybe the back and
bladder control can be easily explained by disease process such as
temporary damage to the gray matter of the spine controlling
involuntary muscle/nerves. Probably it is more important to find the
"flickering pain rubric"

Maybe you could use 'fluttering' as you get with Silicea that also has blindness after headaches. Or forget the flickering and use 'headaches on stooping' and you open up a good range of rx such as Bryonia, Gelsemium, Spigelia, Glonoine (the latter 2 being heart rx), or 'vision, blindness, with headache'.

But the heart sx have to be addressed as this is more life threatening and will be the cause probably, not only of the head/eye sx but her worn out state as well - and then other sx will go. Many heart rx have head and eye pains that are associated with the heart problems. Lycopus, Bryonia, Lactic acid, Silicea come to mind but there will be many others.

I will rethink the heart issue. Heart muscle and nerve control is not
exactly the same as blood vessels which are the obvious thing right
now. Circulation. As you see below, stroke is a very big threat both
on a psychological and a physiological level.

She has left her family in Japan and is living on very little in order
to stay independent of her son. She is actually afraid of her son who
is a dominant character like her husband was (Lyc??). Even in a wheel
chair after a stroke he could dominate her. She can't stand up to
emotional manipulation and so she has run away. (at 66 years old).
There is a lot of breaking off of relationship in her marital family
and with her sibs. She seems to be the one who is cast away although
she is running away now. I am going to have to think about that in
terms of miasms. Isn't breaking off of relationships syphilitic? The
one son she who she is close to has to rely on drugs to control some
kind of mental disease related to depression. He is very artistic. I
think he never had her strength to run away from domination.

It strikes me that in the case you presented below, there may be quite a bit
of speculation, which often leads to a wrong remedy...

I think Joy's suggestion, of combining the "head pain stooping" with
"Blindness during head pain" is excellent -- These are observable symptoms,
and reasonably large rubrics.

The remedies that come through both rubrics are: Bell, Sep, Nat-m, Caust,
Ferr-p, Gels, Kali-bi, Petr, Cupr.

That being said, there may be other considerations:
Where in her head does she feel the pain?
When does the blindness occur relative to the occurrence of the head pain?

The answers to both these questions lead to different rubrics and remedies.
I have a feeling that her ability to run away from an abusive situation
(finally!) may represent a healthy impulse? If so, it would not be a disease
symptom. You might want to investigate a bit further why she is running away
-- how that feels to her... it could give you better insight into that.
The situation, on the surface, makes me wonder about Sepia, of the above
list of remedies -- primarily because she seems to want to be alone, without
any family support (which may make perfectly good sense if her relationship
with everyone is totally dysfunctional). You'd need to look at the peculiar
symptoms of Sepia and see if they correspond, and also find out more from
her about actual symptoms that may be a bit unusual to expand the
differential diagnosis with other possible remedies. There are plenty of
potential diagnoses -- disease names -- which one or ones have actual
symptoms that you can repertorize?

Was the retinal tear from myopia, or the injury? If it was not due to
injury, it may provide a third symptom on which to base the case....

Has atherosclerosis actually been found and diagnosed? People can have
vascular symptoms even when they do not have classic "heart disease" to any
serious extent -- for instance, from irritative vascular spasms (which, if
prolonged enough in a person whose blood is susceptible to clotting, could
cause a stroke or TIA because of a clot). Symptoms that mimic heart disease
beautifully can also be set off, in the absence of actual disease, through
emotional traumas. The disease, if due primarily to spasms can be very
different than with atherosclerosis, although obviously, a blockage could be
a cause of spasms. If indeed blockages (from plaque)have occurred in blood
vessels and been documented, then you're probably looking for primarily a
heart remedy.

It's definitely a complex situation, and I wish you excellent success in
finding the remedy that works really well for her.

That's a lot of help. Actually the original remedy Murex came from
repping that lead to sepia. I did not give the case in much detail
because I was mostly concerned with finding rubrics having to do with
the short spirts of pain. I guess you learn to give up when the
rubric you want is not there and move on to what is there. I looked
in the EH too. I already sent her causticum for the cataract in the
eye that had the torn retina and later the temporary blindness. The
doctor's layperson oriented explanation is the capillaries are getting
blocked. There must be spasming of the capillaries because he said
she had a very limited time to get help to avoid going blind. I think
it would be reasonable to have something like belladonna or gloninum
on hand when she gets these headaches as an acute and the head off the
blood congestion of the head.
She has had a lot of stiff joint type problems always blamed on auto
accidents, but the reaction is always a stiffening of the joints.
That was why I was originally thinking about athereosclerosis. Again
that way one factor in the Causticum choice.
Spasming of the capillary is part of the doctor's explanation. That\s
why she has such a short time to get treatment before she is blinded
from a lack of blood to the eyes.
I guess when you and Joy say heart, you mean circulatory system not
the heart muscle itself. I am going to look at Dr. Roz gemmotherapy
too.
