The first, case, I believe, the patient with macular degeneration, hasn't
budged that we can tell. The client is, as I said before, focused only on
his vision, which has, in fact, stabilized, with no further loss, but at a
point beyond legal blindness. The pathology in the eyes got much better on
physical examination, but the loss of vision has not improved. I'll just
keep him on the remedy for another couple of months, and see if I can get a
good interview with him at some point to be able to ask more in depth about
dreams and emotions, and get a clearer assessment of his vision.
It's been an interesting experience. His sister was the one who wanted him
to try homeopathy, and he himself has no belief or interest in it. So it's
hard to get him to even pay attention to himself, other than his primary
problem. He says he's been taking the remedies, but I have no assurance
that this is the case, and I have a funny feeling that he hasn't taken them
very much. I've seen in other cases where the patient was acting to keep
someone else happy that a lack of belief or interest in the homeopathic
treatment can lead to an unsatisfying outcome, quite possibly as much from
lack of accuracy in presenting the symptoms as anything else. Of course,
the patient's own self observation is a crucial piece in getting an accurate
case, and where s/he is little inclined to put much energy into the process,
we lack vital documentation for case management.
This patient has gone to see several other doctors during the time I've been
working with him, for things that he never told me about that obviously
would have been essential elements of the case -- a chronic cough, heartburn
(which, of course, are related pathologically as well as homeopathically),
recurrent bronchitis... I'm not going to continue working with him beyond
finishing the current treatment with Arnica, for these reasons.
I've learned from this experience that I must get a firm commitment from the
patient up front that s/he will give the treatment 4-6 months to show
results, and really put some energy into observing and reporting, that s/he
will consult me with any additional symptoms, and that homeopathy will be
the main treatment modality during that time.
The second case, which I believe is the January one, took a really
fascinating turn when the gentleman visited from New York for a couple of
days, and I was able both to do an in-depth interview and to observe his
comments and behaviors close up.
The Nat-m has worked beautifully on his emotional stuckness, and he had
literally moved deeper into a whole new layer that looks very different from
before. He's taking care of himself, exercising and watching his diet
again, out of his depressed state, making definite plans for retirement and
even looking forward to it, and even being willing to take sick days off to
do things he wants to do that occur during a school session -- a deep, major
change.
Now, instead of agonizing about his long-dead partner, he's started to think
about his childhood. He's concurrently in psychotherapy, and this is
undoubtedly helping him to identify emotional issues , aided by the
energetic impetus provided by the remedy. (In fact, my partner, a
psychotherapist and MD, and I are now purposely collaborating on work with a
shared patient with the intent of observing and analyzing how therapy and
homeopathy interact.)
One of the first things the patient said, out of the blue, was "My father
always made me feel very SMALL." (Wow!) Then he told of a recurrent
childhood dream of being in a bathtub where he was too BIG, and all the
water would drain out over the sides when he got in. Then he proceeded to
relate a new layer of symptoms that has come up since the old layer has
pretty much completely resolved. Clearly, we had gotten down through the
relationship and bereavement grief to a basic childhood layer that, when
analyzed with the concomitant physical symptoms, pointed to Lycopodium,
although Nat-m still hovers around the edges.
His spontaneous comments presented a whole new case that was fascinating,
starting with the comments about his father and the dream. He was also
contending with a really weird sounding cough that was a single hack,
repeated every couple of minutes, corresponding with a tender sensation in
his throat pit, only on the right side, >open air. In fact, he says that he
generally feels better when he goes for a walk outside if it's cool, and
worse indoors. His previous diarrhea had resolved into flatulence, with
abdominal distension noticeable right after eating. He then, while he was
in California, proceeded to manifest a really terrible cold that also
screamed "Lycopodium." He had chills that didn't get better when he was
next to a heater, and a rather high fever at night only, with no
perspiration. His thirst at night, always present, had increased
dramatically. He also complained of ongoing symptoms of a dull ache from
the forehead over the top of his head, accompanied by an aching heaviness in
his eyes, which were slightly painful, feeling gritty. Unfortunately, the
rubrics of being made to feel small by criticality or the dream of
displacing water in the tub didn't repertorize, but certainly one could take
ailments from mortification (=humiliation) and suppressed anger as rubrics
representing those feelings.
Interestingly, he fits the basic Lycopodium description of a rabbi or
professor (he's both) whose focus is to hide his inner feeling of being
small and insignificant. His added weight, his emphasis on social
appearances and glamor, his desire to take on all possible leadership tasks
both at his college and in the synagogue resonate very well with this
etiology. I repertorized as follows, and gave him Lyc 12c in an aqueous
solution to take daily for three weeks until follow-up. The numbers after
the rubrics are the number of remedies.
1 1234 1 CHILL - MORNING - warm stove, by a 3
2 1234 2 GENERALS - COLD - air - amel. 124
3 1234 1 HEAD - PAIN - pressing - Forehead - extending to - Vertex 4
4 1234 1 STOMACH - THIRST - night 84
5 1234 3 COUGH - HACKING - tickling in larynx, from 44
6 1234 2 COUGH - AIR - open - amel. 33
7 1234 2 THROAT - INFLAMMATION - right 21
8 1234 1 FEVER - DRY heat - night 50
9 1234 2 EYE - HEAVINESS - Lids 101
10 1234 3 MIND - AILMENTS FROM - mortification 56
11 1234 3 MIND - AILMENTS FROM - anger - suppressed 18
So, this has turned into an interesting case that shows layers stemming from
different emotional traumas, with the older one coming to the top after the
more recent one has dissipated. This has been exciting to work with.
