I used to be a surgical intensive care nurse and cared for these people. You would never ever see me having this surgery and I tell all I can to avoid.

They split your chest wide open and the risks are very great. I know people who have never been the same after - from air embolisms during the surgery.

They stop your heart and pump your blood through a bypass machine. Tiny little embolisms are very possible.

and the surgery is really not proven to be of much benefit.

Do they know all this? Probably not.

You cannot plan for what might happen and get the right remedies until something does, other than the routine post-operative remedies that are helpful for us

I also know of people who have got their life back after this surgery. I know one guy who has had it done 3 times and my cousin has had a triple bypass. in my opinion this is a case of surgery which can do a lot of good. I always tell any patients of mine who have to have surgery to take Echinacea for a fortnight before to build up the immune system, especially against the nasty bugs we have in hospitals here in UK

I was a Thoracic and Cardiovascular surgeon. Been there, done that, many times.
The risks are real.
The latest literature I have seen is that there is *statistically* not much difference between open CABG, coronary balloon dilatation and medical treatment, when the immediate post operative mortality and morbidity is excluded.
Only when the origin of the coronary arteries is stenosed, is a mechanical system safer and faster that conservative treatment because when the blood supply is very restricted, and increment in obstruction can lead to a fatal MI.
When talking about more peripheral lesions, surgical results are the worst.
