apprehension before performance

I'm treating a musician who gets anxious before performances. His hands break out in a sweat just at the thought of performing, or when he rehearses mentally, and before the performance itself he gets diarrhea.
I was thinking towards Arg-N, can anyone strengthen this or offer other suggestions? I don't know that Arg-N has the sweating-diarrhea combo. He says it's so bad that he takes a cloth with him to wipe off the instruments.
Thanks,
Vera

thanks Tanya and Rochelle - I know that both Gels and Arg-N have the diarrhea, I think Gels has a tendency to be more "paralyzed by fright" and would connect it to the kind of stage fright where you forget what you're supposed to do, which this px doesn't have.

He does have some unclear agg from sugar - though I'm not sure if it's a belief that sugar is bad or an actual agg, but that part would seem to confirm the Arg-N. As a kid he ate sugar by the spoonful, but now doesn't. Only it's not clear enough, and the sweating is very clear, I saw it on his hands when he was just thinking about rehearsing!

Any more ideas on the apprehension=sweat+diarrhea combo?
Vera

Hello Vera,
i have a quick list of 'remember to consider' remedies for
performance anxiety that includes:

Aconite
Argentum nitricum
Arsenicum album
Calcarea carbonica
Gelsemium
Ignatia amara
Kali phosphoricum
Lycopodium
Natrum muriaticum
Phosphorus
Pulsatilla
Silicea
My daughter is a professional musician - so I have some experience
working with musicians over the last 28 years. The hardest thing
seems to be getting them to verbalize just what it is they are afraid
of - someone has usually given them the words in their past - such as
afraid of dissapointing, or fear of failure, etc. It is seldome
something they thought of - they were simply told this by a teacher
or parent along the way - and accepted it as their fear - so it is
very hard to actually find their personal fears/anxieties.

While your description would certainly make me think of both Arg-N
and Gels - have you considered Aconite? I only mention it because I
have seen it work well for those who 'just the thought of performing'
is enought to set into the 'anxiety' reaction.

Just a thought.

FWIW Opium has sweat and feels powerless and could have diarrhea or constipation. Almost always sensitive to noise. Arg Nit has a sense of hurry?// Jean

Actually I have a patient who always now takes Aconite when she thinks
she maybe called upon to speak in public. However I am pretty sure she
doesn't have the diarrhoea problem. The only remedies I have found that
have anxious sweat and diarrhoea with anxiety are Ars and Phos Ac. I
would still try the Arg Nit first.
With Gels I see this as a Rx to use when there is an anxiety that they
are going to die!! More use for anxiety on going to the dentist:-)

Think I will give the Arg-N first and see. I would expect to see more insecurity for Ars, although at first the idea appealed, and more fear for Acon. When asked what makes him anxious before performance, it seems to be more how others will see him.

Something about the Arg-N also seems to relate to how his mind works. He does have a sense of hurry, and has managed to achieve a huge amount in a short time. His mind jumps fluently from subject to subject, I can see a Sulph underlay but it's clear that's not the remedy he needs now.

Thanks for all your input, I'll try to keep you posted!
