HOMOEOPATHY AND POTENCY
from Grant Bentley
While there is often a lot of talk about posology, for the most part it is a topic made more complicated than it should be; this potency for that condition, 200C or higher when mentals are involved, go down the scale if it is mainly physical - 1m for this realm and 10m for another. Well let me tell you something that I know for certain - there is a difference between theoretical homoeopathy and practical clinical homoeopathy and that difference is sometimes vast.
In the last, 17 yrs of clinical practice and teaching, I have been fortunate enough to have travelled the world, lecturing and meeting a large range of practitioners, so I can let you in on a few little trade secrets (but not all at once). One of the first things I learned in my travels is that everywhere thinks somewhere else is homoeopathically better than the place they live in.
In America they believe that homoeopathy is more respected in Europe, while Europe believes the same about India. In England many spoke of how much better homoeopathy seemed to be in Australia, while Australia says the same thing about England. The truth is, modern homoeopathy is not as strong as it used to be anywhere in the world.
There are a number of reasons for this, some are historical and factual - others are personal supposition. Knowing that my personal suppositions can be upsetting to some, I will state what I believe is the major problem as delicately as I can. ‘Something is wrong with the way we practice homoeopathy constitutionally.’ Let’s leave it at that for now.
History shows that when homoeopathy was practiced correctly, it gained favour in all circles of society. Homoeopathy became revered by common people in general and it statistically proved its worth in epidemics. Homoeopathy became famous for treating all manner of diseases from cholera to typhoid, smallpox and even flu. Now all that reverence and social appeal has gone, replaced by medical derision and public ridicule.
Those who are observant will notice a common thread in the last paragraph, i.e. every disease named above is an acute disease. In short, homoeopathy worked wonders in acute disease but since we are no longer in a period of acute epidemics, homoeopathy has fast tracked itself down the medical ladder, quicker than any other established therapy in history. This is because the theoretical structure for treating chronic disease is flawed and our slide down the medical hierarchy proves it.
Homoeopathy does not belong to some by-gone age but it has not adapted well to the changing needs of our time. Hahnemann knew treating chronic disease was different to treating acute, that’s why he wrote Chronic Diseases. Epidemics were already being successfully treated so he knew the similimum worked, yet Hahnemann still developed the chronic disease theory and focussed almost entirely on its development for the rest of his life. Why? Because the treatment plan for acute and chronic disease is not the same, there are absolute and fundamental differences between the two because their origin is different and this makes all the difference! More on that some other day.
For now let’s focus on a small issue first – posology or dose. Hahnemann had tried a number of potencies in a variety of ways. He even stated that there seems no end to how far potencies can go, yet he deliberately went back to 30C, stating it was high enough for any mental requirement, yet small enough to influence physical symptoms. Hahnemann was also a big believer in repeated doses – which is why he developed the LM potencies.
After 17yrs of clinical practice let me tell you what potency most of my patients receive. If they are very sensitive, frail or young, I give them 6C of the indicated remedy daily. If they are not frail they get 30C of the indicated remedy daily, regardless of their condition or mental state.
Often practitioners believe: the more mental the case – the higher you need to prescribe, but this is not true. The 30C potency was commonly used in provings and it bought out many of the mentals today’s practitioners believe you need higher potencies to treat. This is not only wrong it does not even make sense.
While a patient continues to improve, there is absolutely NO HARM in repeating a homoeopathic medicine daily. Of course if there are aggravations or problems - stop and re-address the case, but 99.99 times out of a hundred, the problem will be the accuracy of the remedy - not the potency.
