Oxford University Press publishes new book on Integrative Oncology

In case you haven't yet heard, Oxford University Press will be publishing a series of textbooks on integrative medicine, and their first book in this series is called "Integrative Oncology " edited by Andrew Weil, MD, and Donald Abrams, MD. Dr. Weil is a Harvard graduate who is America's leading advocate for alternative and integrative medicine, and Dr. Abrams is the head of oncology and hematology at San Francisco General Hospital, and he completed Dr. Weil's 3-year course in integrative medicine at the University of Arizona.
You will be intrigued to learn that there is a chapter on homeopathy entitled "Homeopathy for Primary and Adjunctive Cancer Therapy" that I was honored to coauthor with Menachem Oberbaum, MD, Iris Bell, MD, PhD, and Shepherd Roee Singer, MD. Drs. Oberbaum and Singer work together at the Center for Integrative Complementary Medicine, Shaare Zedek Medical Center, Jerusalem, Israel, and Dr. Oberbaum previously conducted research on homeopathy that was published in Cancer, a leading medical journal. Iris Bell, MD, PhD, holds multiple appointments in the Departments of Family and Community Medicine, Psychiatry, Psychology, Medicine (Program in Integrative Medicine), and Public Health, at the University of Arizona, and presently, she is the head of research at the Program in Integrative Medicine that Dr. Weil started.
Although there isn't conclusive evidence that homeopathic medicines are effective in the treatment of cancer, there is much more research than most people realize using homeopathy to reduce the side effects of conventional medical treatment. Further, the historical and international experience with homeopathic medicines in a wide variety of acute and chronic illnesses, combined with a growing body scientific evidence and a benign safety profile, would suggest a place for homeopathic treatment in an integrated medical approach to cancer treatment.

I predict that the publication of this new book, along with others that will be published, will help to usher in a new era in medicine. The emergence of "integrative medicine" (the effort to take the best that conventional medicine and alternative/natural medicine offers) represents an ideal to which is hard to be antagonistic.
