Greetings
does herbal medicine interfere with homeopathic remedies?
Or can patients be treated homeopathically while she is taking herbal medicine?
If the patient decides to choose homeopathy how can the switch from herbal medicine be make in the safest manner?
Any comments or advice is much appreciated.
Thank you
Kind regards
Lucy

Hello Lucy,
I don't think there is any one answer to this question. I frequently
use mother tinctures along with homeopathic – so that could certainly
be considered `herbal'. A good example is the use of Hawthorn
(Crataegus). I also recommend herbal remedies along with homeopathic
in very specific short term situations, and thus far have not
observed any problems. But the key is choosing the individual remedy
for the individual and the individual situation. Also, I never use
herbal remedies for extended periods of time.
Where I see a big problem is the indiscriminant use of `herbal'
medicines (usually blends) from well meaning friends, articles, and
health food store clerks, or long term use of herbal medicines
without time out for liver recovery. But then – the indiscriminant
use of homeopathic remedies and blends is also a problem.

Hi Lucy,
I often used herbal tinctures and homeopathy together. The way I learned this at college is
that herbs work on the physical body, and homeopathy works on the energetic body, so
they are complimentary. In fact, I often get the person started on the herbal first, say to
kick start a sluggish liver, and then the homeopathic follows a week later, thus avoiding
massive aggravations. It seems to work well with my clients. Best, Grace

Herbal medicine does interfere with homeopathic remedies
It is true because remedies are prepared from herbal.
If you are a case that take herbal medicine you can wait it for afew days and then case taking again & cure it with homeopathic remedies.

I am sorry Grace but I have to say this....
If this is the information your college gave you, it is patchy in accuracy and flawed on several levels. While there are no interactive effects between homeopathy and chemical medicines (herbs included), one has to look at the principles of application that underpin the action of individual mediciens from both schools of treatment. Unfortunately, I have no time to write more.
I would just like to say that this list once had wonderful contributions from fine homeopaths so that all had the opportunity to learn homeopathy accurately. Since the atmosphere of 'homeopathy plus anything and everything' has been tolerated and encouraged in recent times, they have left and the advice given to others is now often eclectic in nature.
As there are many eclectic lists on the internet to support this sort of information, it is sad that this list, once dedicated to homeopathy, is going down this path. A lot of fine contributors from which a lot could have been learnt have now moved on as a result.
Kind regards,
Fran Sheffield

where tinctures in homeopathy and herbal usage seem to overlap it is
usually in the area of organ support eg chelidonium, berberis,
crataegus. Burnett said that the nearer the proven homeopathic
picture was to the whole case the further from tincture you had to
go. tinctures were to be aimed specifically at the organ and its own
pathology. This is how most homeopaths operate from my own survey a
couple of years ago. In herbalism you also seem to have antacids,
anti-inflamatories etc etc. this action of herbs seems quite
allopathic in concept. Possibly better for you than conventional
medicine but I don't see how that would be supportive of homeopathy.

Thank you for the replies.
There is a new patient that wants to start homeopathy. She has lots of fears and high anxiety and depression.
She told me that she is taking Chinese herbs and had acupuncture last week.
If she is off the Chinese herbs she gets her fears etc back.
I would like to see her as I know that homeopathy can heal such states, however I am concerned about her getting off the Chinese herbs (her has no idea what herbs they are), as I don't know if there could be withdrawn symptoms from the herbs on top of her original ones.
Any further comments on how to proceed is much appreciated.
Thank you
Lucy

Hi Lucy,
In my experience she can certainly be treated while she's taking herbs;
I do it with myself all the time! And most of the small group of
people I treat do use herbs and/or vitamins and/or other supplements
and/or modalities, either occasionally or ongoingly. I was taught (and
find it very reasonable) to ask the person not to begin anything *new*
around the time of beginning homeopathy, simply in order to have a
stable baseline. (Except, if there's any reason to suspect that some
problems might be *caused* by anything they're taking, it might be
reasonable to experiment with discontinuing first--depending on person,
situation, and "suspect substance.")
I read your later post, that in this case the herbs are Chinese
(prescribed by someone else, or did she choose them herself?) and they
are having an effect she considers necessary--calming her fears. In
that case why not treat it as tho it were a prescribed drug? Just do
what you can to sort out (and this might be the problem) what her
picture was *before* she began the herbs, and on basis of that, plus
what happens when she discontinues, plus "the rest of the case", try to
find a well-suited remedy, have her begin it in some conveniently
repeatable form (low potency, or LM). Once you have clear improvement
happening, she will probably begin to cut back or cut out the herbs on
her own--that's what I've seen, experienced and heard, over and over.
When a (supplement, drug, etc.) is no longer needed, the person simply
drops it on their own.
I'd used herbs and vitamins for maybe 20 years before having any
contact with homeopathy, and during the 15 years since have been very
free about using them (herbs, vitamins, etc.) when seemingly needed,
and dropping them when seemingly not needed. Honestly I don't see any
problem with that at all.
Best wishes,
Shannon
