Hi,
Why are positive characteristics such as joyful, cheerful, smiling, content etc. rubrics. I thought that a rubric should describe a pathological state. Or at least a state that is out of balance. Are they like this when it is inappropriate? For example, they should be sad or in pain.

Hi, Ellen, That's when I'd use this type of rubric. Such one-sided emotional states regardless of what's happening do occur, and to the extent that they're the person's way of responding to the stress of what's going on and it's to a strange or peculiar extent, it has good value as a "symptom."
