So intelligent supplements are necessary rather than optional to even
enjoy minimal health.
Excess vitamins are excreted, by pathways developed along with our
basic metabolism (unlike trying to excrete drugs for example, which
needds kidney and liver special functions and chemistry) so there is
no problem talking them - there's a lot more problem from deficiency.
Excess supplementing is very hard to do though it is more easy to
get an imbalance of those that go together - so like any health care
area, it needs a touch of knowledge and intelligence to apply.
The more that is applied, the better it can enhance health. For
example in Dr Rozencwajg's superb new book, Organotherapy, Drainage,
and Detoxification, this book is so thorough on all the ways to do
this, it includes a section on foods that help specific organs etc.
That helps too - but we still need to supplement specifics in an
individualized way - as we do with drainage or homeopathy or exercise
or food.
Even a well tuned system can not get its OPTIMUM supply of nutrients
in the modern world.
So everyone needs to supplement (wisely), not just in cases of
specific pathology (or we will end up with those pathologies!).
Not realistically.
It is only if you are VASTLY out of line with what you supplement,
that you can induce symptoms of excess. But we nearly ALL have
symptoms of deficiency.
That is too broad a statement to have meaning.
If we take synthetic forms of OIL soluble vitamins - then it is
possible to have problems, but thosde are hardly ever sold these days
as the geenral pubnlic knows to avoid synthetic oil solubles. I can
not find synthetic Vit D forr esamnpe - it is all the natural D3 form
these days.
Only Vit K is still readily available as synthetic form (K3) and that
is because they do not know how to arrange to make supplements using
K1 or K2 natural forms.
Again on Vit A and D - most people are getting this from fish oils,
not from synthetic ones.
However when it comes to water soluble ones the synthetic forms are
BETTER for many people as the lack the allergens that accompany
natural extracts.
In my case for example I can make good use of any amount of ascorbic
acid that isw NOT an extract but that is manufactured to exacting
standards and high purity, with no additives.
The body is *designed* to excrete excess water soluble vitamins in
excess of uses. In fact if we still were in the garden of eden we
would always taken in excess, and excrete the rest - it;'s a safety
feature so we do not go short.
We are *supposed* to err on the side of caution - and are designed
for it - thus to take in MORE than we need, to ensure we do not go
short is a design feature of humans.
With respect that has noting to do with getting the right amount of a
vitamin.
When you take 1000mg of Vit C as a supplement you do NOT get all the
inflammatory sugar in the orange juice. If you did take it as orange
juice you would get sicker with free radicals not healthier from vit C.
The point of supplement concentrates is to supplement what is needed
WITHOUT the stuff that is not needed.
You seem to have forgotten that shipped in vegetables and fruits lose
half their Vit C every day, and that the average person can only buy
them after 2 weeks. The fruit and veg does NOT lose its inflammatory
sugar - just the Vit C. So we NEED to put it back into the nutrient
chain. We can not afford to live in a dream world - this is real
world. Food we buy is not rich in nutrients - and instead of needing
what wouLD be in them if we could get them fresh - ewe actually need
MORE detox ability as we have air pollution, radikoWAVE pollution,
water pollution, stress damage "pollution" and on an on - all needing
vitamin as components of detox. Mainly those detox vitamins are Vit C
and E.
Sadly too, recent studies reported that today’s "fresh" fruits and
vegetables are lower in certain vitamins and minerals than
they were as little as 50 years ago. These studies compared nutrient
data from as early as 1934 to as recent as 1995, for the U.S. and
Canada. For example, two peaches would have supplied a woman’s
vitamin A RDA in 1951. Today, she would have
to eat almost 53 peaches to meet this requirement!
Why exactly isd not clear - partly it is that varieties arfe produced
that do not deteriorate as easily in transport etc - but that leads
to les nutrients - partly it is soul depletion of nutrients - and
there's a long list.
Bottom line - we can NOT get nutrients from "fresh" food no mater how
we look at it.
So we NEED to get educated on how to supplement wisely.
19 oranges is NOT as sensible as 1000mg of ascorbic acid. We do NOT
need the glycation from the 190mg of sugar that accompanies the
oranges. We DO need the Vit C.
There is very little vitamin A in carrots (maybe 800 units in a
large fresh one), you refer to carotene I presume. We can convert a
little of that to Vit A if we are healthy enough - which is why
people who drink a lot of carrot juice go orange. That is not from
Vit A

Fish oil from fish liver oil is a good supplement for Vit A.
Carotene in carrots, comes with 5g of inflammatory sugar per carrot.
Hence - the eye and lung protection from polluted air and and an
earth with a hole in the ozone layer to cause harm from too much UV
in the sunshine -NEEDS extra Vit A for fighting against this damage.
What's missing is enough visual purple (which we make from Vit A) -
not an orange skin full of carotene. So we need to be smart about
where we get the Vit A we NEED and not get sugar and carotene excess
that we do not need.
The liver only has a burden if you use oranges and carrots to get
EXTRA vitamins needed, as those have digestion issues needing the
liver. There is nothing toxic to be detoxed when we take in vitamin
supplements. Our bodies are designed to naturally use them - or to
excrete excess WITHOUT CHEMICAL CHANGES to them - so thus without
involvement of organs like the liver. It's how the metabolism works;
it's how we are designed.
Excess Vit C (as ascorbic acid) is excreted as ascorbic acid -
exactly as it is ingested - there is NO work from the organs needed:-)
Sensible multi-vitamins are designed to take the arithmetic out of
vitamin balance issues.
AND to ensure supplements of ALL the things missing in "fresh" food
these days.
For example the body excretes B1, B2 and B6 in a specific ratio. This
means that if you supplement only one of them, you MAY after a while
get short on the other two. (You will start getting mosquito bites
as a clue)
SO if you have a deficiency of say B6 (as most people do, it is a
nerve nutrient depleted under ANY form of stress) then it is fine to
supplement the B6, as long as you also take a balanced tablet with
all three as well - to ensure there is no deficiency of B1 and B2, if
you need to excrete any excess B6.
Similarly - calcium and magnesium are connected and it is "dumb" to
take calcium, without also taking magnesium.
So more and more, the tablets come in more convenient formulas, as a
group.
Another reason is the need for one nutrient to absorb another. They
just work together.
SO we all need to supplement vitamins for one or more above reasons -
and there are good ways to do it.
It is like walking with blinkers on to pretend that vitamins should
or could all come from food these days.
Even for healthy people
The facts of nutrient composition of "fresh food" and of
environmental conditions prove otherwise.
Of corse the drug companies will fill your ears and eyes with
propaganda to make you leave out supplements to get/stay healthy, and
make you instead get sick and need drugs......
Namaste,
Irene
