Yes, we do see animals killing their young. It happens more
frequently then you would imagine.
And, yes, you are correct that maternal instincts will cause an animal to
defend its infant to the death.

The difference is that a female animal must feel 'safe' before
she can keep her babies. If she feels safe and is threatened she will
fight to the death to protect her baby from attack, but that presumes she
feels safe in her environment and can raise the baby despite an
occasional attack.

I have a small farm and have seen lots of animal behavior.

Why are women aborting their babies? Because they do not feel safe. It
is a tragic commentary
on today's society.
