Blood sugar question

Can someone give me an idea how significant a blood sugar level of 200
is, in context of an elderly person, feeling unwell, eating very
little, but recently had a small mini-meal (fruit-yogurt-protein
smoothie). I know that's high, but "how high"? (We are trying to get
proper medical follow-up.)

I think I've read that cinnamon can bring down blood sugar level--how
much might it take?

Thanks,
Shannon

Dangerously high is continued!!! Her blood sugar should be at least 1/2 of this at 100!! She is in danger of losing her sight and having peripheral nerve damage.
If she is on no special diet now she should be able to get this number down considerably with the following:-
1) Immediate low GI/low carb diet and that mean NO sugar, potatoes, rice, white bread
2) 6 cups of green tea a day
3) 1 gram of cinnamon sprinkling in her yoghurt/cereal a day
4) 1-3 chromium tablets a day
+ of cause a good constitutional Rx :-)

Thanks, Rochelle!
Combining answers:
She'd recently eaten a very small meal--just a half-cup or so of the
smoothie I described. (With fresh pineapple--we've now got her off of
all fruit.) Her regular caretakers have been given instructions on
using the blood sugar monitor (since none of her doctors have shown any
interest, grrr--too many "specialists"!!!!!), so I should know more
about the patterns and details over the next few days.

The "compromised liver" etc. sounds extremely plausible... Other sigs
of diabetes? I don't know! She's very unwell in many ways (including
lousy peripheral circulation), and getting specific information, or any
sort of remotely coherent overall picture, has been just awesomely
difficult. (Long story, complicated situation, won't try to explain
just now...) But I am kicking myself 'round the block for having not
*insisted* on having *somebody* check the accursed blood sugar many
months ago--she's been under various doctors' care, and it should NOT
have been up to me to have the "brain blast", secure the blasted
machine and figure out how to use it! (Argh, I retire, to the sound of
quietly gnashing teeth...)

So... We've begun the low-glycemic diet, and I'll pass along your
specific suggestions re chromium and cinnamon--thanks again!
Shannon of the frazzled nerves... :-P

Hi Shannon,
Additionally to the already given advices: determine the glicosilated haemoglobin in blood; and start each meal with a protein instead of starting it with a carbohydrate

Thanks Marco, starting with protein sounds like great advice, and I'll
mention it. (Lots of her meals are blended, but we are going for
high-protein!) Re the blood test, what will it tell us? I'll try to
get it done!

glycosilated hemoglobin will give information about high blood sugar levels in the last 4 to 12 weeks

That sounds like what we call here a Hb1Ac test and does not have to be a fasting test.
(Tried to get another for myself last week and was told that I couldn't have one because I am not registered diabetic!!! I said my usual - what do you want me to do- eat a normal diet, make myself ill to prove to you that I am controlling my type 2 diabetes very well on diet??? Our great National Health Service - I don't think!!! )

Hi Shannon,

I have an OTC "machine" and was getting "high" readings. There is a
test solution
used to check the machine and the test solution HAS to be FRESH.
(Like two weeks)
The manufacturer will send out free test solution.

In my case, it was the machine and not the blood sugar level that was
high.

Also, is she on any meds?
