Dave, the notes about Gels. come my own knowledge of the remedy. Much of
this has been gleaned from many books and some cases. I am also passionate
about gardening and know a great deal about plants.

A good exercise I find is to study the repertories and ask youself, "Why is
this remedy in this rubric?" In the case of Desires light, Gels is there is
bold upper case. A strong/intense symptom. As a plant flourishing in winter
(UK) it needs all the light it can get, the shape of the petals also prevent
intense light from penetrating. In the person you sometimes have droopy
eyelids and ptosis which won't let much light in - dullness. But it is
bright yellow and is beautiful - exhilaration. We can make metaphors 'til
the cows come home but it does help to know and understand the original
substance of a remedy. Imagine Apis for example - many could easily write
down a lot of keynotes of this Rx without even looking at a materia medica,
if you understand how honey bees live.

It isn't enough just to repertorise, we need to understand why the remedies

It can be fun to think about and observe DOS (doctrine of signatures-
'course this relates more to herbology than to homeopathy, being that
homeopathic materia medica is based primarily on PROVINGS = LOS: Law of
Similars.)

I trust that you see the three differences:

1. the plant has "desire for light" (they all do, by the way
2. a person may have somewhat similar desire (though not because of
photosynthetic needs) -which desire, for homeopathic purposes, would be
found in the MM, having got there because of PROVING.
3. a person may draw an allegory between curiousity and "desire for light."

A person who cannot (or WILL not) note that there are far, far greater
DIFFERENCES in the three examples above than there are similarities is
simply grasping at the wind.

Allegorically speaking, I suggest that study of honeybees is approximately
1% useful to the study of the homepathic remedy Apis; 99% of what you need
to understand Apis is based on provings and is in the MM.

If you wish to study homeopathy (as opposed to increasing your knowledge of
herbology or mistakenly mixing it in with repertory & materia medica) -when
you ask yourself "Why is
this remedy in this rubric?" -GO TO THE MATERIA MEDICA and find out. The
Repertory did not spring up fully written out of a vacuum. The Repertory
is: the INDEX to the Materia Medica, organized by homeopathically useful
symptoms.

-and truer words were never spoken, but for GODZ sake(s) please get it
clear!
They are there because (generally) provings brought their symptoms into the
Materia Medica.
Homeopathy uses repertorization ONLY as a means to locate POSSIBLY suitable
remedies.
If the homeopath is not intimately familiar with the materia medica of all
the POSSIBILITIES brought to h/ir attention by repertorizing, s/he READS the
materia medica.
Repertorization alone is NEVER the way of choosing a remedy; one ALWAYS (at
least mentally) checks Materia Medica to see that yes, indeed- this remedy
does suit (or not.)

Homeopathy should be done like mountain climbing.
LEARN THE ROPES before you go freehand; else you run an ultimate risk of
crashing and falling into various "methods" "shortcuts" "improvements"
without having ever fully ingrained the basics.

- does the world hold no more mysteries for you?

Certainly the world holds many mysteries- foremost among them (for purposes
of this conversation) must be why individuals will sometimes tend to lump-in
their intimately personal thought processes -AS IF- these were intrinsically
part of (in this instance) homeopathy.

Nothing wrong with a person musing (I like muses on h/ir thoughts about
how direct observation of natural world reflect on h/ir understanding of MM.

Terribly wrong to make general statements on those basis -AS IF- the were
actually homeopathic materia medica.

YES- it is infinitely valuable to experience the "natural world" and perhaps
thereby to deepen oneself as a person, perhaps to sharpen one' powers of
observation; perhaps to exercise the relational skills of one's mind.. yes,
these things probably WILL make a better homeopath-
HOWEVER- these things are not the reproducible generally accepted teaching
of HOMEOPATHY per se.

If your intimately personal relationship with the natural world gifts you
with a mystic vision of the homeopathicity of various substances- this is
fine; I would hope that you would carefully double check this mystic
knowledge before dispensing Rx on that basis- and I would DEFINITELY NOT
recommend that you attempt to disseminate those intimately personal
understandings -AS IF- they were homeopathic materia medica... it was for
that reason that I requested your "source" of your apparent musings on Gels.

It may be that you are so far beyond mere homeopathy that you have but to
look and see what a given plant/animal will cure in human dis-ease.. me,
I'm still just a plodder, I take the case of the individual, I locate in the
materia medica (with assistance of repertorization) any likely candidates,
I read them all thoroughly unless already totally familiar, I choose one
most resembling a coherent pattern which coexists in the case to be cured;
quite often I test with ART technique my top 3 choices (from study of MM-
Not directly from repertorizing!) -often testing in several potencies, as
I've discovered distinct differences on occasion from potency to potency at
the testing stage which have generally borne out well in terms of lack of
aggravation & positive curative response... I then give one dose in liquid
posology

As per what you wrote below - keep on plodding Dave - My knowledge of
Gelsemium is, as I wrote to you, the learning from many books, i.e materia
medica AND cases. Nothing mystic about it at all. Keep taking the tablets.

Liquid posology has been associated with LM's, but is equally appropriate
for other potency scales; indeed liquid posology was introduced prior to LM
potency -in the 5th edition of Organon, LM potency introduced in the 6th
edition.
Quite a few homeopaths over the past 5yrs have benefitted from reading "HAM"
Hahnemann's Advanced Methods by David Little, find it on his website at:

I had the great fortune to be able to study with David Little & his Maui
Healer's Guild for a couple of years around '95, and am very glad for his
emphasis on solid foundations in homeopathy. From a perspective of reading
and understanding Hahnemann's works, and the all-important additions of
Boenninghausen, Hering, and others following in Hahnemann's footsteps, it is
easy to separate the wheat from the chaff, whereas if one is lacking in
understanding of the basics it is apparently easy to not even understand
simple things such as the function, purpose, organization, derivation, etc-
of the repertory and its relationship to materia medica- upon which alone
does homeopathicity depend.
