Hi all
just a question about Crataegus tincture, I found that is it an organ remedy specific for the heart (see Human condition: Critical, by Luc De Schepper pg 117 and 156) . The question is "Can Crataegus be useful to support the circulatory system (hence helping with high blood pressure and high cholesterol) or is it just indicated for the heart?

A fascinating article Lynne and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I suppose its use would depend on the type of heart disease, since it lowers the pulse rate. I've just been reading about the cardiovascular system. I understand now why they say "ignorance is bliss"! Not sure what is meant by 'functional' as in the following context: "Her heart trouble, though very dangerous, was only functional, ......"

Cretageus (Hawthorn) is most often considered first in support of the heart and circulatory system – but Bilberry is frequently recommended when the overall circulatory system is to be supported. Other tinctures used for heart support include garlic, ginko, motherwork, onion; for high blood pressure – dandelion and garlic; for high cholesterol – artichoke, garlic, guggul, psyllium.

I wind up using Cretageus far more often than any of the others in my practice.

Dear all,
I learned awhile ago (who remembers where) that crataegus/hawthorne is "for" ischemea/artery & vein plaque. Which is probably one reason it imacts blood pressure.

Christine I have always taken this to mean that the only changes in the heart/or mentioned organs so far are in the “function” only of the organ – not actual pathology yet – if it continues it usually starts to make the changes in tissue and then becomes a pathological change that can affect the function even more permanently – the functional changes are perhaps like the symptoms that may follow an infection or inflammation of a kidney affecting the normal function (say the leaking of proteins and blood) – if this was untreated or continued there may be permanent pathological changes like scarring or similar which then make the functional changes more permanent. I have always thought of the functional changes as the most likely to cure time to treat (well other than preventative constitutional prescribing) as there is more chance of affecting a cure at the functional change than if there has been permanent pathological or histiological changes. There's more to it than that. As a herb it is well researched for use
in heart and circulatory issues.
With women, the cause of high blood pressure is usually not plaque
(it is with men) but arterial spasm, and hawthorne berries as a herb
will bring that high BP down very nicely - but you need to do more
than that:

The protocol I used myself was two caps a day, then 4 then 6 then 8 a
day - increasinhg gradually till I had the support level I needed.
then add in homeopathy (repertorized, potentized remedy) , fish oil
and Vit E to heal the heart. Then gradually taper of the "crutch" of
the hawthornberry herb needed to support the system during healing.
In my case I started with systolic near 200 in April 2001 and tapered
in Nov 2001, at which point I had systolic of 110 without herb or
homeopathy needed any more.

Please explain what you mean by 2 cups a day, then 4 then 6 a day. Are you using the herb as a tea and not the tincture?

Do you have any experience with using the tincture? I cannot find the herb locally while to tincture is easily available. So you don't use the constitutional remedy all along?

Can number of tea cups be related to # of drops?

Speaking to part of your question, note that Irene wrote two (etc.)
*caps* a day, not cups! Capsules. To do a similar process with
tincture, I'd think you could begin with whatever is suggested on the
label (or would there be any reason to begin with less?), then
increase gradually until the necessary effect is achieved.

My understanding is that it's entirely non-toxic, so you don't need to
be precise with the dosage, just sufficient!
