Hello everyone,
I want to thank everyone who shared their thoughts on differentiating
between the two rubrics (Jealous and Envy)! Your perspectives really
contributed to my understanding of these terms!
Thought you all would like to read K. Allen's research on these terms.
Apparently she used the research from the notes she took at various lectures
from many homoeopathic teachers.
She also states that she used the Webster's Ninth Collegiate Dictionary for
her definitions.
She writes:
"JEALOUSY is defined as intolerance of rivalry or unfaithfulness, or
hostility toward another who is thought to enjoy some advantage. In causal
usage, this word generally has a connotation of emotional involvement.
ENVY: is defined as resentment or malice due to an awareness of an advantage
which another enjoys, combined with desire to possess that same advantage.
This word generally has the connotation of material involvement. A
difference here relates to focus. If the feeling is more strongly associated
with emotions, it is more likely to be a state of jealousy. If the feeling
is more strongly associated with material possessions, it is more likely to
be a state of envy."
