Hi everyone,

I am new to the list, but have been very interested in homeopathy for
a while now. My third child, a girl, is almost 4 months, and since
birth has been very irregular in her bowel movements (or I should say-
regularly goes at least 3-4 days and up to 7 if we let her before
having one). She begins to get gassy (having smelly farts) and often
refuses to finish eating or even eat at all sometimes (she is
breast-feeding) towards the end of that time (starting at maybe 3
days). She is a very happy baby, rarely cries, but will if I try to
get her to finish eating. If I let her stop when she wants to, she is
happy to go to sleep and sleep for a whole nap. She is sleeping
through the night, regularly at least 6 hours, even when she has not
eaten much during the day. I am going to talk to a homeopath in our
area sometime after Christmas, but I was wondering if anyone in this
group had any advice. Is there a homeopathic remedy? I have used a
suppository a few times, and it does clean her out, but that doesn't
solve the problem.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi Hannah-

Yes there are good medicines in Homeopathy for constipation
including in infants.

Does she get the urge to have bowel movements and despite her
efforts she does not get any or does she not get even the urge?

When she eats does she drink a lot or only little?

Her bowel movements are under the control of your food habits a
lot...

How is your food intake? Any food preferences that you are indulging
in? How about salt in your diet?

Any one else constipated in the family?

I am not writing as a homeopath, but as a mother who breastfed for 6
months.

It was the same way with my breastfed - the people at the La Leche
league and a doctor associated with them, whom I consulted, told me
that these kinds of bowel movements were nothing to worry about as
long as the baby is fully breastfed.

And as far as eating goes - just let her "eat" as much as seh wants
(or does not want). This is one of the beauties about breast feeding -
you do not have to worry about it. You do not really know how much she
gets. They will also always have those spurts of eating their heads
off and not eating much.

Why don't you get in touch with someone from the La Lache League? Or
get their book "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding".

Thanks for the advice. That is what I did for the most part with my
first two, but I am reluctant to do that this time around. The
problem is, she acts hungry and will eat one side usually , sometimes
pulling off after just a few minutes and sometimes staying on for a
while, then when I burp her and switch sides, she often doesn't want
it at all. If I let her not eat at all, she will just go another 3
hours or so and then (maybe) eat a full feeding. A few days ago she
only had 2 full feedings and two half feedings in a day, and lots of
gas (farting)...I got a blocked milk duct which has just resolved (and
thankfully not developed into a breast infection like I've had before-
thanks to a homeopathic remedy) I sometimes hold her head to the
breast to start eating the second side, and she will fight it but then
give in and eat quite a bit. I hate to develop a pattern of
"force-feeding" but for my sake I don't have the time to pump after
each feeding if she doesn't eat much, and I don't want to get another
blocked duct. Plus, it seems like if she gets a few good feedings in,
that would help her to have a bowel movement.

So, this is very long, but I am just frustrated. I will probably take
her to a practicing homeopath in my area.
