Digitalis (foxglove)
The properties of foxglove and its range of action on the heart were introduced into modern medicine by accident.
A British doctor was making a journey in the 18th century and he stopped at an inn for a break.
The landlord on finding that this traveller was a doctor begged him to see his wife.
The land lady was found to have swollen legs and in a very poor state.
the doctor advised the husband that the prognosis was poor.
When the doctor was returning, he stopped at the same inn to find out what had happened to the landlady - only to find her well and serving in the inn. He asked her what she had done.
The land lady said that soon after the doctor's visit, they had a visit from a gypsy woman who had also examined her and then gone into the fields and collected some foxgloves, brewed it and given it to her to drink and she had become well very quickly.
The doctor then returned to London and experimented on the London's poor (during which process he killed few as the brew is poisonous) until he settled on the allopathic dosage.
