Homeo biz to touch $500m

New Delhi: For years, it has grown quietly in the shadows of the pharma industry, settling for second place to allopathy. But now things are changing fast. Finally, the Indian homeopathy industry is coming out on its own. Estimated to be worth Rs 1,250 crore, the industry is now growing at 25-30% and by 2010, it’s expected to touch Rs 2,600 crore. In fact, more and more people are turning to homeopathy as a first line of treatment, especially for chronic ailments. That’s because it has effective remedies for many diseases now. Perhaps this explains the sudden mushrooming of practitioners in every corner of urban India. Realising its importance, many hospitals too have started enlisting homeopaths in their panel of doctors.
Interestingly, not only India, the homeopathy industry has seen exceptional growth across the globe. The size of the global industry has gone beyond Rs 135 billion and it’s growing at around 25% per annum. At Rs 45 billion, France has the largest homeopathy industry in the world. This was revealed by a study done by Assocham.
In fact, a recent Assocham survey of 5,000 patients across Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore and some smaller cities like Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Lucknow et al, came up with some interesting results about homeopathy.
It showed over 55% felt very highly about homeopathy. They felt even though it takes longer to root out ailments, the treatment is safer and physiologically satisfactory as there are no side effects. Moreover, there is a growing disillusionment with conventional allopathic medicine, which has, for many years, been the first line of treatment for most patients. People feel homeopathy offers more personalised treatment, with greater one-on-one interaction between the patient and the physician.
In fact, the Assocham survey showed nearly 80% homeopathy users switch to allopathy only in exceptional cases and during acute emergencies. Many also felt that homeopathy was gaining importance because of the numerous fake allopathic drugs that are now available in the market and patients including doctors are loosing confidence in them.
As of now, there are over four lakh registered homeopaths in the country and approximately 13,000 more are being added every year. The size of the homeopathic drugs market is also expanding fast.
However, there is a huge gap between homeopathy and the mainstream healthcare industry in India. This gap will continue to remain due to the lack of homeopathy hospitals and institutions.
There are very few institutions that offer hospitalisation for homeopathy patients and that is where a lot of money comes from.
