jatropha curcans

Hello All,
I am finally at liberty to share a bit about the
Jatropha case some had asked about a few weeks ago. It
was plain old hand-written repertorising that led me
to choose this remedy - maybe I was lucky in regard to
the exact rubrics I chose and the order i wrote them
out in, because Jatr-c appeared in three of my first
five or six rubrics, and I have been taught to look up
those little remedies when that happens. When I read
the MM, where I saw pretty much the main features of
the case laid out on the page.
This is a woman, age 41, type 1 diabetic for 25 years,
with episodes of total blindness (retinal haemorrhage
- operated)and early stage kidney disease. Referred to
me from an osteopath who is treating her for ongoing
tension and stiffness in the shoulders.
CC: - repeated attacks of violent vomiting and
diarrhea, until point of dehydration, with frequent
hospitalization on this account. There is a strong M/E
component to this trouble, having to do with breaking
away from 25 years work in the family business where
she is very much dominated and unappreciated, moving
into a new and fulfilling career in social work. She
has a good awareness of her situation, and has already
made the break in terms of going back to school and
being trained for a new career, but for economic
reasons she cannot make a full break yet at this time.
She becomes violently ill every time she has to go
there to work.
That's the short version. I decided to focus on the
physical sx to see if a remedy could just balance her
health enough to see her through this period of
transition. She is doing a lot of spiritual work and
getting counselling therapy, and I felt that I wanted
to stay away from that end of things for the first
prescription (maybe that's not very good classical
homoeopathy....
.
Rubrics:
STOMACH/Vomiting/violent
STOMACH/Vomiting/diarrhea, during
STOMACH/vomiting/drinking, after*
* she said she can't keep down enough water to take
Gravol, has to keep trying to get one to stay down
STOMACH/Anxiety
EXTREMITIES/Stiffness, shoulder
MIND/Sleepless/thoughts, from activity of
I'm ashamed to say that I have lost the used envelope
back that I started this case on, so I don't remember
exactly how I began, but so far, jatropha is in all
the above rubrics. Of course there were many others
where it is not included. I called her to ask more
questions ( I normally take a few days to decide on a
remedy) and she confirmed many more aspects of the
remedy on indirect questioning. These were:
Gurgling noises in abdomen
Cramps in legs at night
General prostration of strength
Itching eruption between fingers
The Mind section of Clarke MM is not huge, but
certainly depression and great anxiety are reasonable
if broad descriptions of the mental state, as well as
General great prostration of strength. I gave a 12c in
water (due to concern for the severe pathology of
diabetes/kidney/eyes) to be taken daily.
Follow-up by phone after 10 days:
She was very ill after starting the remedy, but felt
different, stronger than usual.
After 6 wks, by phone: decrease to every other day
After 8 weeks:
Not been ill even once since that first agg. Few
times, felt like maybe it was coming on, then felt OK.
She said "I am having to learn to live with not being
sick". Is surprised to notice how much she relied on
that. (Interesting in light of our recent list
discussion of holding onto illness)
New Sx: feeling very restless
-craving foods: salty, fried, red wine*, cheese
* Jatr has agg from wine
-acute shoulder pain, localised now in neck
-headache, with throbbing in occiput, pressure around
eyes
M/E - feeling "all over the map", feeling ineffectual
at work, "don't trust myself", "trying to find my own
voice"
I explained that I suspect another remedy might better
address her emotional health, but I want to give this
remedy a chance to do all it can for her, so we
decided to keep on with it, decreasing again to every
three or four days.
8 weeks later
-still no episodes of vomiting. Now when she gets ill,
it is a mild head cold.
Blood sugar has been OK, except that she goes to bed
high, wakes up low, as if she is using up huge energy
during sleep.
Talked a lot about her dreams, always about water.
Great fear of water(Jatr-c!), won't get in the
bathtub, must take showers. Many interesting dreams,
always remebered. There are many deep themes in this
case, including great love of *home*, desire for
solitude, peace, "fitting in", connecting with others
in a way that doesn't compromise herself too much.
Lengthy interview for my benefit more than hers, it
will be interesting to know how far this remedy will
go for her.
Continue as before, Jatr 12c
8 weeks later:
-feeling very lousy for 6 weeks (Christmas stress with
family situation), but still no vomiting. Diarrhea for
one day.
Blood sugar is fine, the nights are OK now.
Feels a noticeable "gestational" aspect to her
situation - realised she started feeling really poorly
at the time which is nine months before she will be
out on her own.
She is keen to advance herself emotionally (with
another remedy) but said "I held my remedy in my hand
today, and I just don't think it's time to leave it
yet"
We'll try going up to 30c in water, every few days, as
before.
Joy pointed me to the website jatropha.org which is a
fascinating read on this plant. Among other things, it
is used to advance the economic independance of women
in developing countries (for those of you who
appreciate a good signature...)
I'll keep you posted as we go along. Thanks to all for
your input and help.
