I have recently read a book by David Owen (not the politician) Principles and Practice of Homeopathy, which I think is quite a good general philosophy and ‘how to’ book for the 21st century. Having said that he does emphasise that you have to work much of it out for yourself in practice!

He takes contributions from others but he obviously has some psychotherapeutic background himself and looks at those aspects of case-taking. I too really liked Kaplan’s book and have heard him lecture recently.

but have found little else. Is it a case that these skills are not

To combine two strings (after much thought)…..
Some years ago I read the Homeopathic Conversation( as mentioned in previous post) and it stimulated an interest in the consultative process. I thought it would be interesting to interview someone who seemed to have an instinctive grasp of what was needed and find out how they might approach certain challenges if only I could pin them down. The resulting article was entitled ‘Doing it from the heart – an interview with Martin Miles’. (HIP 2002). I asked him if there was one golden rule he would give to a student setting off into the consulting room and he said:
‘One thing? Do it from the heart. When you take a case it’s like painting a picture or playing an instrument; it’s just as much artistry - and every artist, to be successful in creating, must do it from the heart.’
Martin was the most sensitive and perceptive ‘case taker’ I have ever seen in action. However I have little first hand experience of others as he looked after me well, on and off, for the best part of thirty years.
He will be sorely missed by a great many people.
