NEW SURVEY IN CALIFORNIA AND OREGON FINDS

New Findings Emerge as Debate Rages in Court

Portland, OR — June 26, 2007 — As the first trial in Vaccine Court
explores the relationship between vaccines and autism, a new survey
released today indicates a strong correlation between rates of
neurological disorders, such as ADHD and autism, and childhood
vaccinations.

The survey, commissioned by Generation Rescue, compared vaccinated and
unvaccinated children in nine counties in Oregon and California. Among
more than 9,000 boys age 4-17, the survey found vaccinated boys were
two and a half times (155%) more likely to have neurological disorders
compared to their unvaccinated peers. Vaccinated boys were 224% more
likely to have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and
61% more likely to have autism.
For older vaccinated boys in the 11-17 age bracket, the results were
even more pronounced. Vaccinated boys were 158% more likely to have a
neurological disorder, 317% more likely to have ADHD, and 112% more
likely to have autism. Complete survey results are available at
www.GenerationRescue.org.

Generation Rescue commissioned the phone survey. Data was gathered by
SurveyUSA, a national market research firm, which surveyed parents by
phone on more than 17,000 children, ages 4-17, in five counties in
California (San Diego, Sonoma, Orange, Sacramento, and Marin) and four
counties in Oregon (Multnomah, Marion, Jackson, and Lane).

The survey asked parents whether their child had been vaccinated, and
whether that child had one or more of the following diagnoses:
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), ADHD, Asperger's Syndrome, Pervasive
Development Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS), or Autism. The
phone survey was chosen to mirror the methodology the Centers for
Disease Control (CDC) uses to establish national prevalence for
neurological disorders in their national phone survey.

Timed to the release of the survey results, Generation Rescue also ran
full-page advertisements in Washington's Roll Call, The Oregonian, and
The Orange County Register today. The ad compares the 36 pediatric
vaccines the CDC recommends today to the 10 recommended in 1983, and
asks, "Are We Over-Vaccinating Our Kids?"

"No one has ever compared prevalence rates of these neurological
disorders between vaccinated and unvaccinated children," said J.B.
Handley, co-founder of Generation Rescue, whose son was diagnosed with
autism. "The phone survey isn't perfect, but these numbers point to
the need for a comprehensive national study to gather this critical
information."

In Washington, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) has been
advocating for such a survey. Co-sponsored by Rep. Maurice Hinchey
(D-NY) and Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX), the "Comprehensive Comparative Study
of Vaccinated and Unvaccinated Population Act of 2006," or H.R. 2832,
was introduced on June 22, and would require the National Institutes
of Health to complete this research.

"Generation Rescue's study is impressive and forcefully raises some
serious questions about the relationship between vaccines and autism.
What is ultimately needed to resolve this issue one way or the other
is a comprehensive national study of vaccinated and unvaccinated
children," said Congresswoman Maloney. "The parents behind Generation
Rescue only want information. These parents deserve more than road
blocks, they deserve answers. We can and should move forward in
search of those answers. That's why I've introduced a common sense
bill that would require the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to
conduct a comprehensive, comparative study on the possible link
between autism and thimerosal."

From 1983 to 2007, autism rates have climbed from 1 in 10,000 children
to 1 in 150 children, a growth rate of 6,000% (boys are significantly
more affected by neurological disorders, accounting for approximately
80% of all cases). ADHD currently affects 1 in 13 children. In the
same period, the CDC's recommended vaccine schedule more than tripled.
The simmering debate over the cause of childhood neurological
disorders shows no sign of cooling, but no study had ever been done to
look at unvaccinated children.

Lisa Handley, co-founder of Generation Rescue, adds, "Everyone working
with autism wants to identify the cause so we can focus on treatment
and prevention. A national study like HR 5940 could help end this
debate and focus all of our resources on helping our kids. Its time
has come, and we hope Congress will choose to put our children first."

The Age of Autism: Study sees vaccine risk

By DAN OLMSTED
WASHINGTON, June 26 (UPI) -- A new, privately funded survey finds
vaccinated U.S. children have a significantly higher risk of
neurological disorders -- including autism -- than unvaccinated
children.

In one striking finding, vaccinated boys 11-17 were more than twice
as likely to have autism as their never-vaccinated counterparts.

The telephone survey of parents representing a total of 17,000
children appears to be the first of its kind -- and contrasts
starkly with several government-backed studies that have found no
risk from vaccines.

"No one has ever compared prevalence rates of these neurological
disorders between vaccinated and unvaccinated children," said J.B.
Handley, father of a child with autism and co-founder of Generation
Rescue, which commissioned the $200,000 survey conducted by
SurveyUSA, a respected marketing firm. "The phone survey isn't
perfect, but these numbers point to the need for a comprehensive
national study to gather this critical information.

"We have heard some speculation that unvaccinated children would be
difficult to locate," Handley said. "But we were able to find more
than enough in our sample of more than 17,000 children to establish
confidence intervals at or above 95 percent for the primary
comparisons we made."

Meanwhile, U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., reintroduced a bill
first submitted last year calling for the National Institutes of
Health to conduct such a study.

"Generation Rescue's study is impressive and forcefully raises some
serious questions about the relationship between vaccines and
autism," Maloney said. "What is ultimately needed to resolve this
issue one way or the other is a comprehensive national study of
vaccinated and unvaccinated children.

"The parents behind Generation Rescue only want information. These
parents deserve more than roadblocks, they deserve answers. We can
and should move forward in search of those answers."

Both Maloney and Handley said their efforts were sparked by Age of
Autism columns that found anecdotal, unscientific evidence of less
autism among the Amish, who have a lower vaccination rate. The
column also reported on Homefirst Health Services in Chicago, whose
director said there is no autism or asthma among several thousand
never-vaccinated children who were home-delivered and remain
patients of the family practice. The U.S. autism rate is 1 in 150
children, according to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention.

A spokesman for the CDC, which recommends the childhood immunization
schedule and has conducted studies that found no link to autism,
said the agency has not seen the Generation Rescue data.

"We look forward to learning more about the survey," spokesman
Curtis Allen said. "It's important to note that self-report surveys
on topics like this often have significant limitations, so one must
be cautious with respect to interpreting the findings.

"It's also important to note that previous studies involving
hundreds of thousands of children have failed to find an
association."

Generation Rescue's Handley, however, said those studies never
compared vaccinated with unvaccinated American children. He also
said his survey took its cue from the CDC's own phone-survey
approach to estimating the incidence of such disorders among
American children.

"Listening to the CDC talk about the reliability of parent
reporting, we thought there's a quick way to get a proxy for whether
or not there's any truth to the hypotheses that vaccines and all
these neurological disorders are related," Handley said. His
organization believes that mercury, including a type used for
decades in routine childhood immunizations, is a major factor in the
ten-fold increase in reported autism cases over the past 20 years.

Handley said the survey, conducted in nine counties in Oregon and
California, asked parents "whether their child had been vaccinated,
and whether that child had one or more of the following diagnoses:
attention deficit disorder, ADHD, Asperger's syndrome, Pervasive
Development Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified, or autism."

Results highlighted by Generation Rescue:

-- "Among more than 9,000 boys age 4-17, vaccinated boys were 2.5
times (155 percent) more likely to have neurological disorders, 224
percent more likely to have attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder, and 61 percent more likely to have autism."

-- "For older vaccinated boys in the 11-17 age bracket, the results
were even more pronounced. Vaccinated boys were 158 percent more
likely to have a neurological disorder, 317 percent more likely to
have ADHD, and 112 percent more likely to have autism."

Handley said he believes the higher results for the older boys are
probably more complete because not every child in the younger age
group would have received a formal diagnosis.

Concern that vaccines are linked to the rise of autism and other
neurodevelopmental disorders has been largely dismissed by public
health officials and mainstream medical groups, especially since a
2004 report by the respected Institute of Medicine found no such
evidence -- and suggested research money go to more "promising"
areas.

But parents -- some of whom say they watched their children regress
into autism immediately following physical reactions to vaccines --
have continued to press the issue. A U.S. vaccine court in
Washington is currently hearing argument over whether nearly 5,000
such claims should be paid by a federal vaccine injury compensation
fund.

Handley said the fact that his organization could produce such a
study on a relative shoestring while the U.S. government has not
suggests it is hesitant to confront the possible ramifications.

Two years ago CDC Director Dr. Julie Gerberding told UPI that "such
studies could and should be done" but offered several reasons why
they might prove difficult, including the variability of autism
diagnoses, possible genetic differences in the Amish and the small
number of never-vaccinated children in the United States.

"They haven't lifted a penny since then," Handley said.

Full results of the study are at generationrescue.org.

Autism Study

Last Update: Jun 26, 2007 11:39 PM
Video Watch This Video

Do childhood vaccines contribute to autism? A study released Tuesday says
there is no doubt about it. The phone survey commissioned by Generation
Rescue polled the parents of 17,000 children in Oregon and California,
including right here in San Diego. It showed that vaccinated boys are two
and a half times more likely to be diagnosed with neurological disorders,
including autism and ADHD than boys who were not vaccinated.

"It was a shock to many to find out that unvaccinated children have never
been looked at to compare the prevalence rate of things like ADHD to
vaccinated children," said Generation Rescue's J.B. Handley. "Despite what
you may read in the media, the work has never been done."

Parents of autistic children who believe vaccines poisoned their children
are celebrating the study.

"So many parents are screaming 'something has to be done,' and we feel like
nobody is listening to us," said Caroline Banks. Banks' 9 year old son
Ryan has autism and was vaccinated.

Banks blames the rising number of autistic children in the United States to
the increased vaccination schedule. In 1983, 1 in 10,000 kids were
diagnosed with autism. Today, it's 1 in 150.

"Back in 1983, kids got 10 vaccines. It's over 30 now," said Banks.

But Dr. Mark Sawyer, a professor of pediatrics, says a similar study was
done by scientists in Denmark and it found no link between autism and
vaccines.

"Although I will keep an open mind about this study, I'll be very surprised
if it changes the overall conclusions," said Dr. Sawyer.

Dr. Sawyer caution parents, "There is no question that the diseases we are
trying to prevent with these vaccines are still in our community. If you
choose not to immunize your child, you are putting them at risk for the
diseases that are potentially there."

Parents who firmly believe there is a link between autism and childhood
vaccines say all they want is more research, and for parents to take a
second look at vaccines.

"There can be such a thing as too much of a good thing," said Banks.

To clarify how serious the implications of the new information from the
Generation Rescue study
California-Oregon Unvaccinated
Survey - Generation Rescue - June 26, 2007 is, this study shows we are
killing and injuring vastly more with vaccines than without.

The implications with figures are spelt out below. The Generation Rescue
study also showed more than twice as many vaccinated children have asthma.
This is in addition to the relative risk for autism being more than double.

If you raise this with your political representatives, you should point out
this is not like a voter's exit poll telling us there is a 3% "swing" from
one party to another. If we had results like this in an election the party
in government would be facing extinction. These figures show relative risks
higher than 2 - that is greater than a 100% "swing".

By way of comparison I attach logarithmically plotted graphs of measles
mortality in the UK and in the USA showing today without vaccine UK measles
mortality would be less than 1 in 55 million and the position is similar in
the USA.

California-Oregon Unvaccinated Survey - Generation Rescue - June 26, 2007

And the rates of asthma are much higher too.

Cal-Oregon Unvaccinated Survey
"We surveyed over 9,000 boys in California and Oregon and found that
vaccinated boys had a 155% greater chance of having a neurological disorder
like ADHD or autism than unvaccinated boys." -Generation Rescue, June 26, 2007

Methodology
Generation Rescue commissioned an independent opinion research firm,
SurveyUSA of Verona NJ, to conduct a telephone survey in nine counties in
California and Oregon. Counties were selected by Generation Rescue.
Interviews were successfully completed in 11,817 households with one or
more children age 4 to 17. From those 11,817 households, data on 17,674
children was gathered. Of the 17,674 children inventoried, 991 were
described as being completely unvaccinated. For each unvaccinated child, a
heath battery was administered.

The words of some anti-vaccine zealot? An overwrought parent lashing out at
something, anything, to blame? Or perhaps a greedy trial lawyer pining for
the big bucks of injured-kiddie tort.

No, these were the measured, thoughtful remarks of CDC Director Dr. Julie
Gerberding, at a Washington press conference two years ago.

But Gerberding never ordered the study -- one that could silence this
tiresome argument once and for all; a study that any rational person would
concur "should be done."

Why not? One reason, the powerful director said, is that "very high levels
of vaccination... record immunization levels," make it "very, very
difficult to get an effective numerator and denominator to get a reliable
diagnosis."

But maybe it's not that difficult to find an "effective numerator" (i.e.,
unvaccinated children) after all.

It certainly wasn't hard for the respected polling company, Survey USA, to
find nearly 1,000 unvaccinated children living in nine counties in
California and Oregon. All they had to do was pick up the phone.

Survey USA, commissioned by the anti-thimerosal group Generation Rescue,
completed telephone interviews in 11,817 households with one or more
children age 4 to 17. Of the 17,674 children inventoried, 991 were
described as being completely unvaccinated.

Interestingly, the survey found that, among boys (who have
neurodevelopmental disorders at a 4-to-1 ratio over girls) vaccinated
children were 155% more likely to have a neurological disorder, 224% more
likely to have ADHD, and 61% more likely to have autism. Among boys aged
11-18, the increased autism risk was 112%.

This survey suggests there might be a trend here worthy of further
investigation. But is it hard science? Of course not, and that is precisely
my point.

We need the CDC, or some other well-funded agency, to conduct a
comprehensive health study of vaccinated and unvaccinated children, now,
using the soundest epidemiological tools available.

And for those who think that phone surveys are a patently ridiculous way to
study autism, consider this: The Survey USA methodology was based on the
model that the CDC itself has employed in national prevalence studies for
ADHD and autism. In fact, Dr. Laura Schieve, co-author of the CDC's two
national autism phone surveys said that parent reports demonstrate "high
reliability, or reproducibility."

Which brings us back to that numerator. There are clearly enough
unvaccinated kids (outside Chicago there is an entire HMO-full) to finally
do the study that Dr. Gerberding herself says "could and should be done."

Maybe the Survey USA poll is way off base. Maybe an actual scientific
investigation, one that controls for bias and other potentially confounding
factors, would show the exact opposite. Maybe, as one would hope and
intuitively expect, vaccinated children are truly healthier and happier
than unvaccinated children.

I hope that the CDC can prove that they are. Wouldn't that be a wonderful
thing? And like I have said before, it would certainly shut up the likes of
me.

Now that Dr. Gerberding no longer has the excuse that "record immunization
levels" preclude such a study, perhaps she might direct some of the
recently appropriated Combating Autism Act funds to studying the two groups
of children.

For those that disagree -- and I look forward to your rational comments on
why this study should never be done -- I suggest you take up your concerns
with the CDC director herself, and not with me.

After all, Dr. Gerberding is the one who said that this study "should be
done." And I, for one, could not agree with her more.

Comparative Study of Vaccinated and Unvaccinated Populations Act of 2007"
