patient."

When you are ill, you cannot be an unprejudiced observer, therefore how can
you take a proper case?

Sorry for any lack of clarity on my part. No, that's not at all what I
meant -- just that in general we in the US (including me) don't have a lot
of education or experience in treating life-threatening bacterially caused
acutes. Legally and practically, these diseases are the domain of
allopathic medicine, and are generally treated with antibiotics. We may
treat the aftereffects, but we generally are not called upon to treat the
initial acute disease.

Because of routine use of antibiotics, most of us don't routinely see such
serious acutes, except where the diagnosis has been missed medically, as
happened to me for a few days, and possibly to Erika McPhee's daughter as
well. This appears to be one major feature of the health care environment
in many "western" countries. For me, for this reason, this disease
experience was enlightening in terms of the individual effects of allopathic
vs. homeopathic treatments. Experience is a great teacher, as you know.

I've just become aware of an interesting political and policy development re
antibiotics. An acquaintaince of mine who's a patient of Kaiser Permanente,
an enormous medical conglomerate in California, for the past month has had a
sinus infection that's becoming serious. She's in great pain, and is too ill
to work. She wants to be treated only with allopathic medicine.

But now, she tells me, Kaiser has changed its policy on antibiotics, saying
it will only treat patients with infections once they develop
life-threatening symptoms, such as heart failure or high fever. It's
probably a cost saving measure as much as anything. But if many allopathic
hospitals adopt this sort of policy, it will mean a huge shift in the health
status of their patients -- probably, in the long run, for the better. For
one thing, this person is now turning seriously to other modalities, such as
acupuncture and homeopathy, for help with less dangerous illnesses.
