Weird symptom?

This from a friend--does anybody have any idea what it could be?

"All these little lumps are popping out all around my ankles and nobody
knows what they are. One doctor said enlarged blood vessells, one said
torn muscle, one said lipomas, and one even said don't have a clue.
These lumps burn as they form and then ache after they reach the size
of a big red grape."

I'm grateful for any ideas!

possibly varicosities?
hard ? soft? itching? how long do they stay? what makes them go away?
any rashes around? what happens after they become like big grapes-
subside on their own, burst open?

I'll ask for more. I gather that this is new, and so far they are
coming, not going, but I'll ask. Could a varicosity really get as big
as a grape???

She's not local, but I'll see if she has equipment to do it.

I didn't get that question to her last night--will send now!--but here
is what she adds this morning:

"They are kind of soft, no itching, no rash and they stay permanently.
I have one that is now as big as a golf ball. They just burn and ache,
doesn't seem to be stress related I am just surprised by the number of
them and that they are in both legs now. I have had three for years in
my left leg and now they are popping up like weeds. They don't burst
open they just sit there, it looks like a big lump under the skin, no
discoloration of any kind. Nothing makes them go away, I have worn
elastic hose to see if they just filled up with blood but they make a
lump in even the elastic brace I wear and it seems permanently
stretched into the brace even after washing. Even tried putting them
on before my feet touched the ground in the morning, still no good."

Varicosities, then?
