CORTISONE AND CORTICOIDES

[54], [112], [165], [242],.[243], [333], [418], [453], [464], [487], [488], [521], [527], [540].

Cortisone or compound of E de Kendall, is the: 17 hydroxy- 11 dehydrocorticosterone of which the formula is written:

C21-H28-05; P.M. = 360,46; P.F.: 218 degree-220 degree

Used under the acetate form, it is at present prepared synthetically.

The cortisone is a cortico-suprarenal, belonging to the group of 11 -oxysteroides or glucido-protidic hormones.

Its fundamental properties are: augumentation of the neo-glycogenesis; diminution of the utilisation of glucides by the tissues, negativation of the balance of nitrogen, elimination of uric acid through urine, of creatinine (without modification of the creatininuria) and of potassium, retention of sodium, variable action on the urinary elimination of phosphorus and calcium, involution of lymphoid organs with lymphocytopenia, augumentation of V globulines of plasma, inhibition of reactions of inflammation of conjunctivas.

Moreover, inhibits the production of A.C.T.H. and produces of cortico-suprarenal cortex.

Gives an impression of well-being and euphoria.

But there is the possibility of depressive psychic mania.

The corticoides are a group of synthetic bodies of similar activity analogous to that of cortisone, but is more powerful in the same weights of theoretically better tolerance.

In fact, all cortisones may cause some troubles as for example: perforation of gastro-duodenal ulcer, gastro-duodenal hemorrhages, psychic troubles, hirsuitism, acne, osteoporosis. diminution of resistance to infections and to tuberculosis, amenorrhoea and cushingoid syndrome.

The prodnisone and the prednisolone will cause less retention of water, of salt and less hypo-kalimia than the cortisone, but on the contrary be one of the causes of myopathies.

Among the corticoids are distinguished:

Hydrocortisone, 17-hydroxycorticosterone (Hydrocortancyl (R).

Predenisone a derivative of cortisone by deshydrogenation in position 1 and 2 (Cortancyl (R).

The Prednisolone (Hydrocortancyl (R).

Dexamethasone, fluoro 9-trihydroxy-11. Beta Methyl Prednisone, 16 beta methyl delta-l-cortisone (Betalone, Betnesor (R).

Methylprednisone (Medrol (R).

Triamcinolone, fluoro-9 and hydroxy-16 and delta 1-dehydrohydrocortisone.

Thanks for that Rochelle. Most kind!
Just a comment that the one case of Cortisone psychosis or maybe just severe aggravation I saw responded very well to Hyocyamus as did her asthma .She was sitting in the waiting room with her husband muttering and looking rather blue after discharge from hospital and not happy. Jean
