violent games

Should I rule out calcarea for a 12-year-old boy who:
- loves "headbanger" music (loud and cacaphonous, often with violent
lyrics);
- loves to draw gory pictures--stick figures decapitating each other,
etc; and
- loves to talk about violent and/or gory things (not constantly, but
any time he's asked for anything "imaginative", that is what he comes
out with! And those are the computer games he strongly favors.)

He's done well with it in the past, and much of his current situation
matches his picture at that time--adult teeth veeeery slow to come in;
tends to fall into a very negative, grumbly, put-upon frame of mind
which yielded nicely to calc the last time; very low energy, poor
stamina, thin, poor appetite, trouble falling asleep, and waking
unrefreshed. This is just a quick outline... I am wanting to repeat
calc (which he last had several years ago), but this thing about
violence and gore is making me wonder... Or is that just "common" for
the age and environment? (Violent and gory games and movies being
bizarrely popular forms of "entertainment" these days.)
Thanks for thoughts,
Shannon

Hi Shannon,

I was taught homeopathy is expansionistic not the allopathic
reductionistic so we don't rule out anything we include everything.

That said if you felt the calc was so helpful in the past I would
consider another dose unless you uncover some more info to lead you to
a new remedy quickly.

About the violence many of the youth as you know have made this part
of their culture. It is one thing to draw the popular violent drawings
it is another to act out. How does he treat animals and other humans?
How does he react when someone pushes his buttons or tries to control
him? How does he react to real blood?
This will draw out if hyoscymus or stram or other violent remedies
might be in order. I have had patients who loved to try and shock the
parents with the violent stuff and drawings and yet they had such
compassion for brothers and sisters and animals. When asked why he was
drawing the violent stuff he desired to fit in with his peers.
I had a really interesting case though where a teenager, a computer
whiz broke into the public school systems communication system and
every time they printed something porn would print out. He was
expelled of course. He was also depressed, and loved to pick on and
hit his brothers and sisters and acted out harshly and masturbated and
handled his genitals frequently. Hyos had a beautiful effect on him.
He calmed down enough that the other family members were not afraid of
him and even liked him a bit. He got along better with his step mom as
well. There still quarrels and skirmishes as he was home schooled but
life was much much better. Now 15 years later he is a computer master
working high up in the government and loves his family.

His mom credits homeopathy as the saving grace that allowed her to let
him live under her roof and not metaphorically "kill him" I was also
treating her as well. Which brings up the point sometimes we focus so
much on the behavior of the child sometimes we forget to look at the
parents behaviors and attitudes. Treating the whole family can really
change the dynamic.

Sunny

Hi Sunny,

Below:
With animals he is mostly fine, tho can sometimes get a "gleam" in his
eye and cuddle a kitty a bit too hard, that sort of thing--but it does
not get out of hand, and I think it's an effect of his inner tension
and deep-seated frustration (his "issues" with focus and stamina leave
LOTS of room for ongoing frustration; those were in the past helped
(removed for year or more at a time) by several remedies in their turn,
but it is "up" again.

With people there is no overt violence, tho he can get carried away in
rough play; not more so than I've seen in several of his buddies, tho.
In the context of people, I see it as more related to awkwardness (not
good at knowing what is "too much") than violence per se, tho no doubt
there is some spill-over. But this is my observation only; it has
never been raised as an issue.
Rage. He definitely has "anger issues." The physical response does
not go beyond (if really pushed) kicking things, slamming doors, tho.
He rages off to his room and slams the door, perhaps repeatedly. Once
he has had time to cool off, he is ready/able to talk reasonably (if
asked) about what happened, or about whatever had set him off.
Nothing particular, unless sometimes to start cracking jokes about
it--tho NOT if there were a significant injury involved, in which case
he would be immediately attentive and helpful. (I am assuming, because
this was the case in the past and I don't think that his picture has
changed *that* much.)
Stram has kept over and over coming to mind; I finally gave him a dose
a few months back, but did not see any particular change. Hyos also
has come to mind over and over, but not compellingly enough (so far) to
try it--but I haven't ruled it out either...
He does like to shock people :-) (nothing too out-of-hand) tho that
wouldn't explain his fascination with that nasty stuff even when there
is no one around to be shocked... Even as recently as... not sure,
maybe a year ago, maybe more? he used to be the reverse--*soooooo*
easily creeped out by gross or scary things in e.g. movie, on TV--even
an ill-chosen remark in conversation. That's one of the issues that
has ebbed and flowed over the years, with remedies (calc and med I
think did the "heavy lifting" for that). So I have been sort of seeing
this current stage as possibly counter-phobic, but am only speculating.
It is a *big* change, that happened rather suddenly (at least it seems
so to me), within the past year or so, possibly related to onset of
puberty--just at the beginning.
:-)
Nice! Do you recall how often hyos needed to be repeated, whether
possible causation was identified, and whether other remedies were
involved?
Mmm, I sympathize deeply, on basis of my experience with my first, who
did her first four-and-a-half years in a Lyssin state. Thank God it
did not have to go on any longer than that!!!!!! And equally, thank
God I had our wonderful homeopath for treatment and support through all
that!!!!
Oh yes indeed! This family has been treated homeopathically at various
times, some by me and some by others. I know that some homeopaths (our
own first one included) will not treat a minor unless at least one
parent is also under treatment. And from what I've seen, that is an
EXTREMELY good idea!!

Thanks for the thoughts!
Shannon

I have read that the Calc child sometimes needs Calc phos as a teenager when growing rapidly. Here he may need it to assist in growth. The Calc Phos thing of not being at home , which I think relates to trying to find place in world. At 12 a lot of change happening anyhow and basically he does not appear bad. He seems to like to be dramatic.
Wonder what his food likes and dislikes are and what his specific frustrations and issues are, jean

My grandson went from needing the occasional dose of Calcarea to getting two doses of Calc phos at about 13. He had the clear “I wanna be somewhere else” symptom. His parents were considering moving to satisfy him, but once he got the Calc phos that symptom vanished along with other problems. I came on the idea mentioned below from reading Marjorie Blackie and also Dr. de Schepper. Wish I knew what that grandson needs now at 16… Not so clear… Teresa (Northern VA USA)

Change the world one small loan at a time...

very late coming to this but you have to find a way of asking why he likes to indulge in these 'images' and what their 'expression' is satisfying

next would be to grade this as to whether it is a naive curiosity or lurking on a more dangerous level, i.e. he might be transferring these needs elsewhere such as hurting animals, or other children, perpetually angry etc

in other words it comes down to what needs to be cured as always

I would be asking about dreams

interesting that someone who has such a low energy threshold can conjure up such 'energetic' images as if to stimulate or activate the mind - however if the appetite is poor then the energy levels will be as well, so another 'why' would be regarding his appetite and food requirements

calcarea is tubercular and tuberculinum came to my mind especially with the delayed dentition and the need to energise in a rather violent manner but it depends on what else is in the case - so I wouldn't rule out calcarea but I would look a little bit sideways as well. Joy
