To make this homeopathically focused - I believe bad diets would be considered a maintaining cause. So - with that in mind - if one wanted to learn more about raw diets - there are lovely links all over the internet and great lists. And lots of local people happy to help. Co-ops abound.
There is rawfeeding@yahoogroups.com , rawmeatybones@yahoogroups.com , most areas have a local raw feeding list - in New England where I am from - it is rawfedNE@yahoogroups.com . Most breeds of dogs have raw diet lists for the breed.
There are many other lists and not everyone agrees with HOW to feed raw. But at least it gives you alot of places to go learn. Diet is SO personal - with people and of course with their beloved pets.
On the rawmeatybones@yahoogroups.com - there was a veterinary dentist who spoke and answered questions - very interesting about raw, chewing and immune health.
One place I really really love for diet options for my cats and dogs is www.hare-today.com . I guess raw diet can be considered "expensive" but for me - it isn't about expense. It is about my responsibility to my animals. And I enjoy finding ways to focus on quality AND keep the cost down. If I join other people - and order $1000 worth of food from Hare-today - we get free shipping. Last week - 12 of us spent $3000.00 on food - for some it would last them 4 months, others 2 months - we rotate different co-op options. Many of the 12 people were students, some worked basic jobs, others were better off but none of us feel we have money to throw away. But as another person wrote - cats just don't eat a ton, they are incredibly knowledgable about what THEY need and what is 'off" and what they won't eat.
I also seek out places from www.eatwild.com - a great source for pasture farmed meats - great for both humans and critters.
And for the last 4.5 years - I have held monthly free raw diet seminars associated with a store that I convinced to carry raw diet components and tjey routinely get 5- 15 people per month for the seminars. I'd say 1/4 of these people had cats and found that yes - cats were harder to switch but once they switched - the health benefits were wonderful - starting with clean teeth and no more kitty breath and nicer coats and amazing changes with urinary tract health for the boys especially.
Raw is not for everyone but for anyone who is curious - it is valuable to read, hear and investigate your options so you know what your choices are for your pet.
