There is a very interesting but brief article about treating AIDS by Peter
Chappell in the December Newsletter from the Society of Homeopaths (UK). It
can probably be read on their website.

Aids - evidence from the case of shock, shame and denial.

A summary of themes in response to AIDs, based on cases taken by Peter
Chappell in Ethiopia between early October and mid-November. These notes
have been circulated to leading homeopaths for comment and analysis.

SHOCK at HIV test results
run naked through the streets
commit suicide by hanging themselves (cut down in a coma)
completely healthy before, start symptoms same day as dignosis, die in 8
months
OPIUM has the SHOCK, SHAME and DENIAL
CHRONIC CONSEQUENCES
it is god's will that this has happened to me
this may be interpreted as HELPLESSNESS, RESIGNATION. the people are steeped
in religion, interpreted with a child like naivety. it's been here thousands
of years

THE SHAME OF HIV/AIDS
ASHAMED, KEEP IT SECRET, SHAME
even when contracted innocently, like during an operation, they will only
tell essential family members

CONCERN for the surviving family, that they will need protection. What will
happen? Who will stop them getting HIV? In sub-saharan africa there are 3000
new orphans per day, 1500 children die each day currently.

EMACIATION, WASTING AWAY, LOSS OF STRENGTH common. COUGHS are typical
complications, along with tuberculosis and PCPs

the people here are CHILDLIKE in their nature, barely evolved, exceedingly
simple. NAIVE is not quite right as they are really SIMPLE Carbon/Silica on
chart. Peasant or worker types. Ferrum series?

MONEY is a big issue but it's also basic to survival in the third to poorest
nation on earth. BEGGING, MANIPULATION, PLEADING is common to the situation.

WITH AIDS they are effectively RETIRED, IMPRISONED, STARVED TO DEATH. death
speeded up by starvation as many are unable to work.

FORM ON THINKING
one approach - I am looking for an epidemic approach. I am in two minds
about the relevance of the issues. In LOCAL terms, the issues above, are the
BIG PICTURE yet these are not all the issues of all people with HIV/AIDS in
the world at large.

SHOCK remedy - OPIUM or ARSENICUM or HYOSCYMUS

EPIDEMIC remedy
SHAME (5)
HELPLESNESS (3)
EMACIATION/WASTING (3)
CONCERN FOR FAMILY (1)
SIMPLE (3)
MONEY/POVERTY (3)
begging, manipulation, asking for money all the time. they see me and call
out money!!! Oxygen

NOSODE - this seems to prove easily and does no good

IDEAS
these are MINERAL PEOPLE. always concerned with work, money, and survival -
so like the Ferrum series. These are childlike people, simple, naive people
as a group - so like the Carbon, Silicea series.
they seem to be at the level animal intelligence, survival, work and basic
instinct. hardly evolved at all beyond day to day existence. strong basic
nature. these are observations and are not intended as a put down. these are
people at the END OF LIFE so stages 16, 17, 18

BERYLIUM OXIDE, ARSENICUM OXIDE come through most analyses the most
strongly.

A summary (my scanner is not functioning today!!) of the articles key themes
of the aids cases taken in Ethiopia are:

Shock at the HIV test result
Chronic consequences (helplessness & resignation - due to religious cultural
background)
Shame of being HIV positive and keeping it a secret
Concern for the surviving family
Emaciation, wasting, loss of strength

The people are described as childlike in nature, with money as the big
survival issue with begging & manipulation as concomitant behaviours

With AIDS they are forcibly retried, imprisoned and starved to death

His analysis is:

Shock - opium, aresenicum or hyoscymus
Epidemicus remedy:
Shame, Helplessness, emaciation/wasting, concern for family, simple,
money/poverty.

He says that are mineral people - very ferrum, childlike - carbons/silica

They have an animal survival instinct, with day-to--day existence, al in end
of life stages

He says Beryllium oxide & arsencium oxide come through most strongly.

Peter Chappell gives his own e mail address, in the article, as

Europe, Australasia, etc!!

My own thoughts on peter chappels article, which is focussed on Ethiopia.

Many of these issues occurred in Europe & the USA with those who are HIV
positive or who have an AIDS defining illness. The themes in the west have
changed since the advent of combination therapy - with many young people
accepting HIV almost as readily as gonorrhoea - scabies seems to explicit
more revulsion. In the west the fear of poverty is not as big an issue, as
the social safety next is there, with society in general, much wealthier.
There is today, strangely some form of social recognition and a new lifestyle
around HIV, that was unthinkable in the 1980's. Again combination therapy is
key in this, the fear of death is gone. No longer is HIV seen as a death
sentence. Many people with HIV now worry more about their hepatitis C
co-infection that their HIV!!!

Very interesting perspective in the Chappel article. What he doesnt seem to indicate is any success with his analysis of the AIDs epidemic. I am posting him on this question. Thanks for his e-mail.

There definitely is a cultural difference to be considered here. I think shame and secrecy are still big issues in the USA. However, social organization by HIV/AIDs infected people has made it easier for them to be 'out' with their condition. So active social support is part of this picture.

I would think " fear of persecution" and "desire company" would be important rubrics. Also, anger comes into the picture with people: sometimes anger at themselves and sometimes anger at others for infecting them.

The gay men I know are pretty open about their status and talk freely about their losses of friends and lovers. They celebrate their efforts and those of friends/community as they wend their way thru the illness. But fear and anxiety are still present.

I do agree that there is more hope today with the advent of medical cocktails. But there are also more people telling their stories which indicate long-term survival of many infected in the early 80's prior to the new meds. This raises other questions about the illness as well.

What are others experiences and thoughts.

From my own understanding of people living with HIV - their issues have
changed over the last 20 years. I first became involved in NY in 1983, when
the overriding theme was incredulity, fear and paranoid suspicion about its
origins. Personally, I always felt the underlying issue was rejection —
being unwanted by the majority in society. Rejection those who where
initially infected — the gays, drug users, 'Black" (haitian, african, etc.),
and in the developing world — not being part of the "western economic
miracle."
