Wound advice?

With apologies, this is pretty long, and I'm too sleepy to make it
shorter, but won't have much chance to try tomorrow. But I would love
some insight on an injury that has me worried...

Last Wednesday (a week ago) my daughter tripped over barbed wire and
drove a barb into her calf. It was scrupulously cleaned and bandaged,
and in the first few days seemed to be healing well (except that she
wouldn't stay off it!), but last Sunday (I think) she complained that
it had begun to itch, and we noticed that a bit of redness had
developed around the wound, including a short extension down what had
initially looked like a pretty inconsequential scratch.

Arnica helped her discomfort initially ("See bruise. Must give
Arnica." Duh. Should have *begun* with ledum!), but did not reduce
the bruising. Ledum helped her discomfort the next day, but only the
first dose. Being "in recovery" from a holiday bug plus several other
angles of overload, I set aside further search for a remedy in favor of
castor oil pack, which seemed to be working well (redness fading, and
less discomfort).

Then last night I realized that, while the area under the original,
small castor oil bandage was clearing up, there was a new area of
redness outside of that, so I hugely enlarged the area of the oil pack
(she went to school with it on), and *maybe* that is working, but now
her skin is (apparently) irritated from being oil-soaked for so many
days in a row! And I'm not sure that the redness is really defeated.
(I'll see how it looks in the morning.)

So now I'm concerned... Evidently there's a nasty in there, trying to
spread into the tissue--is "cellulitis" the term I want, and
"Generalities, inflammation, cellular tissue" the (only applicable)
rubric? I started with "Wound, inflamed," but I think that doesn't
cover the way it is spreading--or does it???
had a year or two back, when a really inconsequential-seeming scratch
got this nasty infection that was amazingly resistant to my usual
"toolchest". The first eventually yielded to tea tree oil; the second
wasn't responding to that either, but oddly did disappear within a
half-day of being smeared with castor oil (I'd already tried everything
else I could think of, with no apparent effect at all!). But it really
unnerved me, as it was *so* persistent and insidious. Does this sound
like staph, or what might it be???

If my daughter now has the same thing, and via nice, solid puncture,
well, I am nervous! And would love some thoughts and suggestions.
Here's what I have:

- The inflamed area (happily not much left now; I'll see how it looks
in the morning) I would call a rosy color.
- It has been trying to spread, first along that shallow scratch, and
then to the new patch (about 1 inch, circular, hazy edges) perhaps two
or three inches from the prior (oil-covered) site. (The new site isn't
visible tonight, but will have to look again tomorrow.)
- After the first couple of days there hasn't been much pain; just a
little soreness, but apparently when the infection starts to spread, it
itches. (First I thought the itch was from healing, but then realized
not.)
- I haven't seen any clear general or M/E changes, tho it's been such
an "eventful" few weeks for her that it's kind of hard to be sure!

I'm not sure how to rep that rosy inflammation--or maybe I just need
to read the mat. meds to look for it. "Skin, discoloration, red, rosy"
seems too general (not necessarily about inflammation), but it's not
really "in spots" either... Lachesis seems plausible? but not
especially convincing. Tomorrow I'll start reading some of the
"cellulitis" remedies, but would love some thoughts on any aspect of
this. (If I'm not able to clear it pretty promptly I'll take her to
the clinic, but would obviously prefer not to!)

Thanks for any thoughts!
Shannon

Hepar sulph comes to mind when a scratch indurates and becomes red
and sore. Not sure if can itch. In most would use 30c for 3 initial
doses barring good effect or aggravation before that then as needed.
In myself would use 200c, If that does not work would have to think
furthur, nest wishes, jean

Weleda makes a wonderful powder called WCS which I import from New Zealand.
Maybe they have similar in the US & I'm sure Europe.
Everyone I've given it to refers to it as the "magic powder".
I first learnt about it being used on Aboriginal missions here mainly for
diabetic ulcers.
It's great for any open wound.
Ingredients areCalendula flower, 2 Echinacias, Arnica flower & root &
Kaolin.
Not expensive & lasts for ages.
Michele.

Thanks Jean, I'll look at hepar.
I've thought that the way it is spreading to distant sites takes it out
of the realm of "inflamed wounds" etc? Maybe not.

Thanks Michele,
Sounds good! But in this case, it's no longer an "open wound"... The
original wound site is looking pretty good (still a little redness,
tho), and my bigger worry is the new site. It had almost faded away
last night (after a day under oil wrap) but this morning had re-bloomed
to almost its former size. (Got it back under oil, and she's back at
school...)
But this sounds like a good thing to have on hand, and thanks for the
mention.
Best,
Shannon

Yes Weleda do it in UK. I only use mine for drying up wet wounds as I prefer
to use neat HyperCal tincture that I make up myself. It stings for a bit but
then is fine!!!

needn't go much deeper in accidents and injuries, but the neglected symptoms give rise to the selection of medicine.simply Belladonna 200c and calendula 30c will solve your daughters problem......dont go for lachesis or mercsol..etc......silica in 6x along with the above will expell any disturbance inside. But pl add ferrum phos and calc sulph to promote curative process and liver function of your daughter.
But as a matter of fact for accidents and mechanical injuries it is always advisable to run to the physician as the problem is mechanical and the treatment is of more confirmity...we shouldn't go on experimenting on this......for a loss.....

I would think Calendula would do the trick- It has reddish edges to
wounds..

Lachesis has bluish red/black or yellow edges...

If the itching predominates and reddishness I would think a dose of
Sulphur is warranted ( "Every little injury suppurates")- Itching,
burning)

Thanks Hahnemannian,
Would those still apply now, when the wound itself looks almost
normal-colored, but the area of infection / inflammation has now spread
farther into the leg / foot? Whereas originally the wound consisted of
a puncture, a trivial-looking scratch, and a bruised area above (maybe
partly from her fall, but partly from bleeding into the flesh?), now
the main area of concern is a largish (maybe 7 cm across blotch?) area,
spreading, started out what I would call rosy red, now parts turning
dusky)?

I'm feeling awash in the "possibilities"; maybe later tonight I'll be
able to read some mat-med...

Right now I'm trying frequently repeated, succussed doses of gunpowder
3x (only potency I have), but can't tell yet if anything is happening.
(Only been about half an hour since we started.) Do you have any
experience with that, and what do you think?

I think it is going towards Lach, but for now Calendula internal and
external will be the best
