fevers

The other thing I forgot to add that in advocating allowing a fever to run
its course with judicious use of remedies if needed I always give the
following warning
If your child, along with a fever, develops a sore or stiff neck
(not related to injury) with or without drooling present also.
Seek medical aid without delay.

Always follow your intuition it is your best course of action.
Epiglottitis and meningitis must always be looked for and reacted to
immediately or the consequences can be dire. Therefore making parents aware
of what signs are serious, helps them to make informed decicions and
prevents delay if for any reason I cannot be contacted for advice or
remedies to treat these life threatening infections.

Exactly and also teaching them that by giving tylenol, etc, you will be
masking the symptoms and if you teach them that you may very well suppress
the fever and make the condition worse in the long run, it can help.
Information!

Also tell them that giving tylenol will not cure them and prevent anything
- many people do not realize that
Thanks Pauline for the wise advise

I become anxious if the child is flat can not drink or retain
fluids and is not passing urine. Apis often valuable here Sometimes
rehydration necessary in hosp before remedies can work.
A stiff neck, floppiness, flatness, rash as below signals help may be
needed. The ideal would be if homeopathy could be continued in
hospital setting, FWIW, Jean

I agree Jean, I have found that if you fear dehydration it is amazing how
much fluid you can actually get into some one young or old - in 5-10 ml lots
every 5-10 minutes over a number of hours. I occasionally will direct
patients or parents to use a rehydration formula or if not available to make
an emergency rehydration formula
(1tsp salt, 1tsp bicarb, 4 tsp sugar in 1 litre of water - I usually put
about at least 100ml of the 1 litre of water in as orange juice - esp if for
chn as the formula is a bit 'yuk' as kids say and the orange juice helps
make it more palatable and also helps with the osmolality of the formula
without losing any of its rehydration properties. Remember that this is an
emergency mix only. I always have at least 2 sachets of the dry ingredients
for this in my first aid kit and they have been used for sunstroke while
camping in remote spots a few times!!! I live in Queensland Australia so the
heat in summer here can get quite vicious. At a certain point in dehydration
water alone is not good enough Regards Pauline

Hi Pauline,
Thanks for this! Can you (or anyone) explain the roles of the bicarb
and the sugar? Is the sugar for energy, or is it specifically related
to dehydration as well? Why would this formula be better than a
strong, salted lemonade, or salt with orange juice? My (superficial)
understanding has been that sodium and potassium are the two main
needs; is that not right?

My daughter's pattern used to be that *every* time she threw a fever,
she would also become thirstless to point of flat-out refusing to drink
*anything*, tho she was deeply in need of it. In the toughest two
episodes I was finally able to motivate her (a little) by explaining
(carefully and vehemently) that it was either DRINK, or get hauled to
the hospital to have IVs stuck into her. Since she has always been
very needle-phobic that finally worked, but shouldn't "the right
remedy" have brought back her healthy *desire* to drink? I would love
to hear thoughts.
Thanks,
Shannon
