Hi,
I was in a recent accident where I crashed a moped/scooter I was
driving into a wall. (Inexperienced scooter drivers should not rent
them in forein countries, especially on wet roads!). Anyway, when I
flew off of it at approximately 35 mph, I slammed my left side into the
wall before landing on my back on the pavement. This was 2 1/2 weeks
ago and I am still having severe muscle pain across my shoulder blade,
under my arm and into my chest. The muscles are tight, they hurt and
burn like they are on fire. I've gone to my chiropractor and massage
therapist several times already and they have worked out muscle spasms
but they keep coming back. Any suggestions on treatment?

Arnica is the first medicine usually used for injuries. Try that in
30th potency,

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I have been taking Arnica 30x
since I got home from having the accident. But it hasn't helped with
the burning sensation I have been getting in my chest muscles, or
with what the therapist said was muscle spasms. Also, how long can I
take it? It has been a little over 2 weeks now.

What has changed in the past two weeks is that the torn cartlidge in
my lower chest (just under the left breast) has gotten better. But
there is a muscle pain that goes from my shoulder blade, under my arm
and to my chest (all on left side). This was the initial pain I felt
following the accident. I thought that my shoulder blade was broken.
The xrays showed no fractures so the doctor gave me pain meds for the
torn cartlidge. I can't take them because they give me a headache
believe it or not! So that's why I was relying on the Arnica. Again,
the torn cartlidge is better, but that muscle I described is still
tight and very painful. I think because of that, it is causing this
pain in my chest as I try to move my arm and stretch the muscle back
out. When it get's irritated it burns like a hot knive is cutting up
from inside to my skin. My skin actually feels hot. The ice pack was
helping, but now makes it a little worse and heat makes it a lot
worse.
I have begun taking Ruta graveolens for sprains in tendons, bruised
bones, injured periosteum and painful, bruised skin. I haven't had
any external bruising at all though.
I am having my husband pick up some Symphytum tomorrow. If the Ruta
doesnt help by tomorrow night, I will start the Symphtum. It is made
from Comfrey which is known as "knit-bone". It is used for torn
connective tissue, tendons and ligaments.
I am also rubbing Arnica cream on the area. Nothing else has changed
such as mood, thirst etc except that I feel so tired all the time.
I'm getting my sleep, though. Do you know of anything else I can try?

Wonder about bellis perennis. If there has been a lot of bruising
my experience after falls off horse is that absorption of extraneous
fluid makes one feel quite toxic. I do not see burning pain in
Bellis . Hypericum one of many listed under burning pain chest and
if nerves damaged may be applicable.

It sounds as if you've torn a muscle or ligament. Make sure that's not the case, because Arnica is not going to resolve the problem if it is.

HI Paula,
No argument with the remedy candidates you have chosen and are using or
may try (e.g. symphytum (tendons, bones, injury as if broken), ruta
(tendons)). Here are a couple of more ideas, followed by some repertory
rubrics.

INJURY
Rhus-t is one that could be studied. It has scapula pain and is known to
affect the intercostal nerves and no doubt fibrous tissue there. An
important remedy to consider after any injury to flesh, (e.g. Bryonia
sometimes first when cannot move at all without pain; rhus-t later when
very stiff and painful on waking, but loosens up after a while and becomes
less painful). It will need to be stiff on waking then better after waking
up or some other keynote confirmatory to help rationalize the prescrip.
Consider Bry also. If you are pretty new to homeopathic prescribing, you
will need to look online for materia medica to study (see below links) or
have a good book or two (Miranda Castro, or Dana Ullman or Panos/Heimlich
intro book for example... Tylers Drug Pictures and Boericke Pocket MM in
addition if more seriously interested). If not new to homeopathy, ignore
the latter sentence please).

Phos is one that could be studied and may be involved esp if we consider
chronic susceptibility also -- esp if you absolutely cannot lie on the
painful side and you fit the Phos profile in some way in general. Phos is
left sided, affects scapula region, burning pains of various parts, pain
as if broken.

These above just a couple of more ideas.

Cinnabar makes a good point here. Though homeopathic rx can elicit
self-repair of tendon, muscle, ligament tears -- if the particular fibrous
element has been sheared completely or insertion pulled-- you will need
surgery to avoid permanent loss of function of that muscle. There is no
indication of this just from the pain, and determination of the extent of
damage would require an expert diagnosis according to motion and lift
capability in different directions, and palpation. Even the latter may
not be able to tell the extent of the tear.

There IS a group of muscles- the pectoralis minor - which extend from a
process on the scapula to insertion on the forward part of ribs 3-5 (e.g
near under breast you described) and this could account for pain at both
the scapular and intercostal areas. There is also the serratus anterior
group which insert to scapula and ribs, though farther back on the ribs
--but still could cause intercostal pain. So an expert muscle
diagnostician (e.g a shoulder surgeon specializing in fibrous repair)
might be able to tell if anything had sheared completely (eg at the
coracoid process of the scapula for the pectoralis minor).

Another important point -- if x-ray showed no fracture, fine. But if this
is error and the fracture is not aligned, Symphytum (potency, and probably
also tincture) will cause immediate callus formation whether the two or
more sections are aligned properly or not. (i.e. the bone will knit
solidly in the wrong alignment, though after 2.5 wks, that would have
already been well-along anyway).

Fibrous injury to scapular area and intercostals could be extensive at
blunt trauma and took all the force of the impact as it sounds like
-severe or complete tear of pectoralis minor or other muscle or supporting
fibers is possible as Cinnabar said.

Just caveats.
If there is not fracture that needs aligning, and not complete shearing of
anything -- the proper prescription could assist in restoration.

But you might need to go to an experienced professional homeopath -- and
might be advised to after 2.5 weeks. Time may become an issue working
against optimal restoration.

And you might be advised to visit a shoulder or thoracic surgeon for
assessment (get a good referral to the best expert on muscle repairs in
that area, and then dont go for surgery unless absolutely necessary
despite any advice from a surgeon. What you want to know is the extent of
the tear if there is one and which muscle(s), and the conventional(worst
case) prognosis without surgery). If something is completely torn,
surgery might be mandatory.

Time is important. If you have (for example) -fully sheared tendons
anywhere and need surgery on that -- after 2-3 months these may become
difficult to reunite, as apparently they shrivel up and become nonelastic.

How possible it is to tell from the outside of the body the extent of
tears to fibrous elements is a question I can't answer, although someone
else on the list may be able to...
