INTRODUCTION TO THE PROVING
On commencing a proving of Southwest Wind in February 1996, I had a dream that
I was weeping tears of Amber. At the same time, two of my students had dreams in
which I was depicted as a goddess with golden light shining from me. These dreams
encouraged me to take a look at Amber as a possible homeopathic remedy.
Having completed this proving, I can say that if Amber gave us the opportunity to
play with the gods, I am very relieved to leave that tormented life behind and return
to the world of optimistic mortals.
An aspect of the proving which will not be obvious from the notes is the Amber
propensity to gossip. I felt the need to remove the gossip from the provers' notes.
Ireland is a small country and people are readily recognizable through their stories.
Fire (Ignis Alcoholis) seemed to act as a good antidote to Amber with one proven.
The passion of a male admirer for her was growing to a worrying degree and she was
beginning to feel consumed by it. Her fear grew great indeed when buildings seemed
to catch fire in the face of his passions. She was advised to take Fire and she happily
informed me that it neutralized the proving and cooled his ardor. To put it in her own
words, "He backed off' after she had taken Fire. Sepia acted as a good antidote in
other cases.
There are many myths relating to Amber. My own favorite relates to Freyja, the
Norse goddess. I was given a present of a ragdoll cat while doing the proving and we
have named her Freyja. Various stories about Freyja relate very well to the proving.
Her sadness and longing for her lost love Odur is mirrored in the proving by the
passion and longing for an unattainable love. Amongst the various gods that Freyja
was reputed to have had affairs with was her brother Frey, god of the summer
showers. In the proving, one of the male provers had a dream in which there was
confusion as to whether his sister or girlfriend was the mother of his child. Frey and
Freyja rode together on the back of Frey's golden-bristled pig. Dreams of pigs,
particularly pigs being fed orange food, occurred during the proving.
Lyncurius was an ancient name for amber because amber was thought to be Lynx's
urine. Other beliefs considered amber to be the solidified rays of the sun at sunset. In
China, amber was thought to be the souls of tigers. Sophocles claimed that amber
tears came from bird incarnations of the Sisters of Meleager as they flew around,
mourning the death of their brother. Christians claimed that amber was the tears of
birds shed over Jesus' death.
In many cultures, amber has been associated with immortality and was considered
a cure for innumerable diseases. It was also recommended for people with suicidal
tendencies.

Synonym, Amber.
Origin. Amber is considered to be a fossil resin, and according to Goeppert is the
exudation of an extinct coniferous tree Pinites succinifer; the chemical properties and
mode of occurrence of the substance leave scarcely a doubt of its having some such
origin. It has been found encrusting or penetrating fossil wood, just as resin does at
the present day, and enclosing the cones and leaves of the trees; numerous insects,
the inhabitants of ancient forests, are often found embalmed in it. Amber occurs
plentifully in regular veins in some parts of Prussia; it has also been fou=nd in South
Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden and Norway, on the shores of the Caspian Sea,
in Siberia, China, India, North America and Greenland.
The amber used for the proving was found in Madagascar and is reputed to be 60
million years old.
Chemical formula: fossil resin close to ClOH16O with some H2S present.
The remedy was prepared at the Burren School of Homeopathy by John Morgan
from Helios Pharmacy.
