I chose Aconite for a 14 mo old boy who went through surgery to fix
a
physical problem with his penis. They moved the urethra up in the
center and put more skin on the bottom so that it would be straight.

The doctors gave him an antibiotic for use after the surgery, as
most
children who have this surgery refuse to urinate because it hurts so
much. This refusal causes bladder infections, so the antibiotic is
used as a prevention.

This little angel was circumsised at the same time, to use the
foreskin in this operation.

Now, 48+ hours after surgery, he is a happy baby, but when it comes
time to pee, he screams in agony with pain, and cries the whole
time, arching his back. He trembles with the pain when his mom
changes his diaper.

He drinks water without a problem, and eats like normal. After
surgery docs said that he would not eat and if he did, would vomit.
He had all of the crackers they gave him, went home and ate more.

He is in greater pain at night.
A few remedies came to mind--

Hypericum, for the surgery and nerve-rich parts affected,
Arnica--swelling
Aconite--for preventing cystis, for the shock after the surgery, and
the unbearable pain.

I ended up using Aconite 30C with him, for the three major things.
Does anyone have any other recommendations? 30X was all I had, and
because of that, I recommended giving it very frequently.

He slept 3 hours straight between 2-5 am that night, but was up
before then. He slept from 6 am to 11 am, also. Mother said he is
not swollen as the Dr's said he would be. She also noted that he
seems to be calmer between urinating.

why is the child in << pain at night, if there is no obvious reason
than that would be a strange sx - borax, apis, staphysagria and
cantharis come to mind though. Joy

I checked out your recommendations, Borax doesn't fit, but Apis could
be a good fit, for the red and inflamation, and I could see a definite
case for Cantharis.

I'm truly not sure what to make of the pain. He acts like nothing
happened for the most part, except perhaps walking wider so he doesn't
touch the injured site. until he has to pee. Then it's obvious that
it smarts a lot.

Warm room, warm diaper, both make the situation more uncomfortable.
Didn't have my Vol. 3 book to look up Staph. Will do that tomorrow.

We all have our body clocks to consider and thus pain will be more
tolerated at certain times of the day or night but this sx << night,
should be considered particular to the case if a strong enough sx.

Can you say why the pain is there - one would think from post-op (why I
suggested Staph), but then he would be unhappy and in pain most of the
time?? So what is actually causing the pain - distention, tissues
stretching, pulling muscles, urethra, bladder emptying, or actual urine
causing pain due to excoriation etc. Obviously difficult to tell with a
child if they cannot tell you although if the skin is sore and red that
would be a useful sign to say there is burning pain or something like
it strong enough to make him scream with the pain.

Can I ask why you thought Borax didn't fit? Sarsaparilla is another to
think about when a child screams before (during and after) urination,
but if this is all post-op sx I would think more towards Calendula or
Staph (maybe even Bellis). Best, Joy

Hi Kerry,
I think your first choice of Aconite was very good and hopefully the little
boy is already showing more signs of improvement by now and no further
action is necessary. If not, my thoughts would be centred on Cantharis and
Pulsatilla. Cantharis first because it is noted for the acute nature of
burning pains at all stages of urination, beginning, during, end and even
immediately after urination, which can be due to its characteristic
inflammation of the urethra. Also worth considering is Pulsatilla in this
urinary tract context as it is an allied remedy to Cantharis. Consider it as
well, for the general symptoms of the patient you state, e.g. worse warmth,
warm room and the tendency for pains to be felt more in the evening and at
night. Since you are closer to the case than anyone else it would be a
judgement call whether to base the symptoms on acute urethral inflammation
with burning pains, or the more general symptoms of the patient's reactions
to his trauma. (Pulsatilla is also in the highest grade for < during
urination.)
By the way, Thirstlessness during the pains is a keynote of Pulsatilla, but
if he is drinking moderate amounts of water at other times this does not
contradict Pulsatilla, only if he is thirsty or anxiously gulping down huge
amounts of water would be a counter-indication. In the proving, Pulsatilla
produced haematuria and burning at the meatus, so those symptoms it can also
cure.
