I have just watched a report on BB2 about an undercover reporter going to homeopaths and homeopathic pharmacies to ask about prophylaxis for malaria because they don't want the side effects from allopathic drugs!! To cut a long story short it appeared that we have an obligation to tell the enquirer that they should take allopathic drugs!!! The representative from the Society of homeopaths was trying to be forced to say that they should take Nelson's, Helios and practitioners off their register if they do otherwise. I am pleased to say that she avoided this nicely. The programme was attempting to show that taking just homeopathic prophylaxis is dangerous and you will end up with malaria. Melanie from the S of H said that homeopathic Rx have been used for 200 years and that there has not been a proper study to show that they do not work.

So what do you all say?

I would provide a patient with what they wanted but also say that I am not responsible if they don't work!! It is the patient's choice what to do. I am preparing a pack for someone at the moment who will be working with the poor in China and then India- I lent them the World Traveller's Manual and they chose what they wanted me to give them.

I am going to India with Dr AUR's Clinical training group in January and have no intentions of having any vaccinations or taking any drugs!! I will put my trust in homeopathy. I won't be doing anything prophylaxis either and I bet you lot are the only ones who think I am not crazy!! However I will be drinking and using only bottled water, be taking root ginger, either chewing it or in a tea daily and will take acidophilus/probiotic with me in case of tummy upsets.

Unbelievable - but as we say - follow the money......

I have worked twice in Calcutta and travelled all over India without
any vaccinations - took my small daughter on one of the trips and she
didn't have any either - be sensible - don't eat anything that you
don't peel or boil - don't eat salad leaves ever - don't drink the
water including ice cubes - I drank mostly soda water with a slice of
lemon etc. - change over to India /China time and relax - the people
I met who got sick seemed to be those who had had the
vaccinations.... Fear and anxiety increase susceptibility. I can't
tell anyone else what to do only make my own choices and pass on the
information.

I totally trust homeopathy and have done for the last 25 years,
including for such things as septacaemia (which I didn't get in India
btw! ) and it has never let me down.

The only time I came unglued was when I was working in Baghdad after
the First Gulf War and I ate lettuce at a meal some Iraqi friends had
spent their weeks wages on (hospitality is an obligation and so
acceptance is required) and I went down with severe amoebic dysentery
- verified by stool analysis - but that resolved in 24 hours with
Urine Therapy. (Fast and drink only water and all urine for 24
hours). So whatever happens you will either be self sufficient
or you'll be in India where the place is crawling with excellent
homeopaths and homeopathic pharmacies!

btw I read some accounts recently about the use of Papaya leaf tea
for malarial prophylaxis - you should take it on a regular basis, but
it seemed to be very effective.

Hi Rochelle

I have been traveling to India for many years without ever taking any "prophylactics".
When you are outside the main cities, I suggest you check the closure of the bottled water. At times empty bottles are collected, filled with normal water and sold again.
I eat only fruits that are pealable and cooked vegetables. I love the Indian food!!
Where in India will you be going for the training?

Yes it has been suggested that I take a knife with to peel fruit!! I also love Indian food and know that there will be no difficulty getting vegetarian. Dr AUR's training is in Chennai (Madras). The only thing I will miss is a raw salad as I have been told not to eat them!!

In '95 I caught malaria in India. I went to a local homeopath and was
cured in three days by a single dose of Rhus-tox 200c. I never had a
relapse as is common with conventional allopathic suppression. Others
in my group used conventional medicine and were sick for long periods
of time. I read later in Asian Business Week that 10,000 people were
reported to have died in that district (Nashik) of Maharashtra alone.

The homeopath I went to had seen many cases of malaria in this
epidemic and he knew the genus epidemicus. It wasnt a single remedy.
It was about 8 different remedies. He had to suss out from my symptoms
which had been clouded by homeopathic self-treatment, which remedy to
give.

Before I went I met a Brit who had gone the route of conventional
allopathic prophylaxis for several months (I dont remember what the
drug he used was) and developed a detached retina. He didnt make the
connection until he ran into another traveler who used the same drug
and also had a detached retina.

Personally I wouldnt use prophylaxis of either the homeopathic or
allopathic kind unless I knew there was a single genus epidemicus
remedy and people around me were starting to drop. Otherwise Id wait
to see if I got the disease (most dont) and get treated by a competent
homeopath or other experienced healer. I think it is important to get
referrals to competent healers in my locale when I travel.

Would you take prophylaxis for all the potential diseases known and
unknown, you could contract in a tropical country? How about snake
bite or...? Sounds like a recipe for a screwed up vital force. Sounds
like disease phobia which westerners are known for, especially
Americans. Maybe we all need Carcinosin.

God points but what percentage of Homeopaths in the UK have
experience of treating life threatening acutes of Dx like malaria
(or typhoid, cholera, Dengue fever etc) ? We all know the theory but
would we be up to it in practice, to start we'd need to be available
24/7 and whereas the infrastructure in some countries (e.g. India)
allows for Homeopathy to take it's rightful place, in the UK most
homeopaths work alone and with limited experience of treating malaria
(or other serious acutes seen in travellers)

Rochelle,
It is very important to be aware of anything that gets close to your mouth. Make sure that the top of the water bottle has not been removed or even opened. Just that the cook washed an apple in unboiled water is enough if you are susceptible. Bananas that have the skin peeled and thrown away would mitigate this. Drinking a soda with an ice cube in it - the ice cube has probably not been made with boiled water. For a westerner it takes some thinking about. I never used mosquito netting, neither did my boys, but my wife always did.
The food in India is wonderful, and so are the people. You will have fond memories for the rest of your life. Have fun!

How many homeopaths have experience with sucessful
prophylaxis? And again, which of all the potential diseases
do you try to prevent: Dengue, typhus, typhoid, yellow fever,
cholera, malaria, etc.? I am told that Malaria alone is morphing due to all
the allopathic suppression. It doesnt present quite the way it
used to. How would you choose the appropriate remedy?
For someone traveling for a short period (couple weeks or less), knows
exactly
what diseases are actively present where they are going, taking one or two
doses
of a possibly prophylactic rx might not be a problem. It would be
unfortunate
and possibly confusing if they proved the remedy, feeling sick from it
while traveling.
For long term travelers they would likely prove or even graft symptoms from
long
term use. They would be better off seeing a local practitioner if they
caught something.
I think with reasonable acute case skills a homeopath can
treat these illnesses, given all the literature on the subject
and advice from our experienced foreign colleagues. My Indian homeopath
just took a very careful case, repertorized it (by computer) and chose
a remedy. But he did have the benefit of experience.

As per discussions about prophylexis of malaria while coming to india. I think its an issue of succeptibility its birth of homoeopathy that malaria never comes from mosquito but when there is prior susceptibility of body than patients gets a group of symptoms similer to malaria. many a times in clinical practice we see that patient coming up with inflammatory conditions but no bactirial or viral infection is there as dr banerjee has written that there is a disease before any organism attacks us so if some one is healthy than no prophylaxis is needed at all
