Pressure in ears

Post by Paula »

Since we were on the topic of earaches, I was hoping someone might
have a suggestion for my problem. For several years my ears seem to
"plug" up very easy. Especially if my sinuses or a cold is acting up.
But whether it's going in the mountains or flying in a plane, they
get plugged up and there is a lot of pain, especially in the right
ear, that lasts for weeks. Nothing I do helps. My family doctor sent
me to an ENT who did all kinds of tests including putting a tube down
my throat. He found nothing, and said that my eardrums were in
perfect shape. As a matter of fact, if he said if he needed to use a
picture for class to show what a healthy ear looked like, he could use
mine! But I still have pain and the feeling that there is pressure
that won't release.

Any suggestions?? I want to go on vacation to England next year, but
I know when I fly I will be so miserable the whole time there from the
pain of the pressure in my ear! :(
Please help!

Thanks,
Paula

Speaking of ear pain, I just happened to see this H.Coulter quote.
You might consider a DPT or pertussin nosode or related remedy:

"At least half of all U.S children have had otitis media by their
first birthday. By age 6 90% have had them. This condition accounts
for 26 million visits to physicians every year. In addition, about 1
million children have tubes inserted in their ears every year, at a
cost of $1000/operation. Thus $1 billion is spent each year on this
operation. Just imagine what it means if this is all, or mostly all,
caused by the pertussis vaccine. This particular "glue ear" type of
otitis was not known in American medical practice before the late
1940's or early 1950's -- in other words, the time when the pertussis
vaccine was being introduced......My estimate is that one child in
five or one in six is affected to some degree by a childhood
vaccination. This estimate is based on the incidence of dyslexia and
hyperactivity in American schools today -- about 15% to 20%. "--Harris
Coulter Ph.D.

Hi Paula,

I have a similar problem with my ears - my left is worse. I haven't
found a remedy yet that has helped when in that pain situation so I
am appreciating this thread. A couple of years ago I took a 3 day
bus trip rather than fly for 4 hours.
Recently family problems put me in a difficult position of wanting
to fly and I was fortunate to meet someone who told about me about
ear plugs. You put them in and block your ears before the plane
ascends and again before it descends. The blocking seems to protect
from the pressure change - you can see the sort of impact the
pressure change has by looking at a sealed plastic bottle of water
after you have landed. On one flight I noticed the guy next to me
was just using his fingers to block his ears.
The earplugs worked for me on 3 flights - I thought my problem was
solved forever! Two flights were good weather and one was bad. But
on the most recent flight the weather was very bad and the plane
must have gone up in a way that accentuated the pressure change - I
had a feeling that I hadn't put the plug in properly and then I was
in pain again. I did try TFT for pain relief - with a reasonable
effect, but not permanent - maybe I was tapping around the wrong
issue?
The sensitivity in and around the ear stayed for a couple of days -
it almost felt as though air had been forced into the skin tissues
and I was constantly aware of the eardrum

Next flight I will try the earplugs again, making sure the blocking
is more secure. You have to check the type of earplugs - there are
some that specifically warn against use when diving or descending in
an airplane.
