Sudden illness

This is about a dog rather than a person, but am hoping folks might
have ideas.
This is a 12-year-old dog who has had health problems in the past, but
for the past few months has been doing very well (in context).
Saturday evening she suddenly jumped up as if startled, vomited and
urinated, spent a minute or so walking in circles, then staggered off
to another place and lay down again, looking "confused". From that
point she grew rapidly weaker, until at times she has been unable to
stand (tho at other times is able to stagger around reasonably
successfully). Over the next hour or so her right eyelid began an
rhythmic twitch or tic, drawing upward as tho a string tied near the
middle of her upper eyelid, going about one tic per second, or a bit
faster. Later her head also began to move slightly in a similar
rhythm. By now, about 36 hours later, she seems stronger, is
staggering to where she wants to go fairly well, but extremely
uncoordinated, and it seems as tho her balance is off too.
Sometimes she drinks, but vomits it up again within a few minutes;
sometimes she vomits froth, and sometimes deep yellow liquid.
I don't think there is any poison around that she could have eaten, and
I think this is something internal (even brain tumor???), but am very
interested in any thoughts!
Over the past few months she has had episodes of jumping up from a rest
as tho startled. She would then look around with a sort of exasperated
expression, then lie back down. This has been just every now and then,
perhaps a few times a week recently.
Frankly I've been expecting her to die "any day now" for about the past
year (tho for my of that time she's been perky and energetic), and am
having a hard time finding my right "place" with this episode. My
*feeling* is that it's perhaps her time to go, and my main inclination
is to keep her happy until she passes. But I also would love to
understand what might be happening. Anyone here seen anything like
this?
Thanks for any thoughts!
